The United States Under-20 Men’s National Team defeated Portugal Under-20s on Friday, 3-1, in their final match before the start of the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey in seven days.

Jose Villarreal got the U.S. off to a great start in the ninth minute, scoring off a direct free kick past Portugal goalkeeper Jose Sá to put Tab Ramos’ side in the lead. Sporting Lisbon attacker Bruma equalized for Portugal in the 28th minute, and then in the 40th minute, the U.S. suffered a blow after Luis Gil was forced to be taken off after knocking heads with Portugal midfielder Ricardo Alves.

U.S. defender Shane O’Neill was one of two changes to the side at halftime, and six minutes into the second half, the Colorado Rapids centerback lost his mark and headed home to regain the lead.

U.S. Under-20 newcomer Alonso Hernandez scored his first goal with the team when he took advantage of a mistake by Portugal substitute goalkeeper Bruno Varela and scored a goal that gave the U.S. a two-goal advantage in the 53rd minute.

Cody Cropper, continued to prove himself to be the number one goalkeeper in the U.S. squad by making a number of stops late, making eight saves total. Ramos and the U.S. now prepare for their first match at the Under-20 World Cup, taking on title-favorites Spain next Friday in Istanbul.

This was the full strength team, by the way, not the fringe squad players that were at Toulon.

Two last names. Sounds exotic. Who is he?

I'll warm up the bandwagon.

19-year-old attacking midfielder from El Paso who debuted for Monterrey in April. Did enough at Toulon to apparently get a squad spot.

quote:

TIJUANA, Mexico – Back in January, Monterrey striker Alonso Hernandez had all but given up hope of getting a call into the US Under-20 squad ahead of June’s U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

“I’ve never been to a camp,” Hernandez explained to MLSsoccer.com by phone on Thursday. “I think it is out of my reach, but of course I’d like to play at the World Cup.”

In the meantime, the 19-year-old Hernandez has enjoyed a rapid rise with Monterrey, from scoring seven goals in nine starts for their U-20 side, to featuring three times for the senior team and winning plaudits for his displays.

But the real icing on the cake came last week, when Monterrey coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich called him over just before the squad were about to have lunch.

“Vucetich called me to tell me the US national team had approached [the club], that they were interested in me," Hernandez said. "In that moment I felt a lot of joy, but I went away calm until the call-up was concrete."

It was a call from US coach Tab Ramos that confirmed to Hernandez that he would be going to France for the Toulon Tournament between May 28 and June 8 – his first trip to Europe – and that the US had in fact been watching him.

His participation in Toulon is no guarantee that he’ll be in the World Cup squad, but it’s a start. The national team call-up has been the culmination of a long journey for the attacker, who can play as a striker, as a No. 10 or out wide.

Hernandez left his native El Paso, Texas – where his parents are still based – at age 15, signing across the US-Mexico border for Indios de Ciudad Juárez, but he was almost immediately loaned out to the club’s third division team in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. Almost two years later, when Indios lost their league status, he was snapped up by Monterrey for their Under-17 squad.

Given the road he’s already traveled, the youngster knows that the call-up for Toulon – in which some regulars will not participate – is merely an opportunity. He needs to make the most of it in order to crack Ramos’ final squad for Turkey.

But now, at least, the chance is at Hernandez’s feet. It’s not hope, anymore – it’s execution.

“[At the World Cup] you play with the best players in the world in the age category and my family would be very proud,” Hernandez said. “The motivation is too much. I’m going to give everything to do as good a job as I can.”

Ah, just realized that I watched him play against France.

He was pretty underwhelming, but the rest of the team was, as well.

Guess that I'll give him a pass.

19 yo getting minutes in Liga MX is a good thing. Hopefully, El Tri doesn't come calling.

Pretty decent. It's hard to assess because the mediocre squads run together for me. They're not as good as the Bradley, Adu, Altidore squad.

ETA: To clarify, it's hard to assess just how much better they are than some of the mediocre squads

In all honesty, this is the first cycle I've really paid a lot of attention to, but I'll put my uninformed opinion in here.

I will say that this team qualifying for the World Cup was huge. The 2011 bunch was supposed to be the best ever, but they got knocked out at the CONCACAF quarters. Rongen did a great job of identifying multinational guys like we see now, but that 2011 team underachieved sooooooo much. In Rongen's 10 years in charge, we were consistently out in the Round of 16 at the World Cup. With Jurgen in and no World Cup trip, it was time for a change. Ramos seems to be a better in-game manager for this group.

This team is almost as talented IMO compared to years past, but they got put in the Group of Death. However, they've played well when they're at full strength. A few guys have been getting major minutes as MLS or Liga MX starters, and that's a huge boost.

We've identified the talent and gambled on guys who may not play for the U.S. senior team. They've shaped up well together as a team, as you could see in the CONCACAF run (besides the final) and the Portugal friendly.

Success at the World Cup will be tough in that group, but it could sow the seeds of some future stars in the senior team.

ETA: Like Joey said, not as good as the Adu-Altidore-Bradley squad, but they've done a better job of playing up to their potential than some of these recent disappointments.
