March 2, 2015 – Johnson is arrested at his home in County Durham on suspicion of having sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.. Sunderland suspend him from playing pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Johnson’s family say he is innocent and that they will stand by him.

March 18 – Johnson returns to training after Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat lifts his suspension following his arrest. The midfielder comes off the bench against West Ham three days later.

April 23– Johnson is charged with three counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl and one count of grooming.

The three counts of sexual activity are alleged to have taken place on one night in January 2015, while the grooming offence is alleged to have taken place between December 2014 and February 2015.

April 24 – It is announced that Johnson can continue to play for Sunderland.

May 18 – Johnson’s solicitors tell Peterlee Magistrate’s Court that the footballer intends to deny the three counts of sexual activity and the count of grooming. No pleas are entered at this stage.

June 3 – Appearing at Durham Crown Court, Johnson pleads not guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child and another count of grooming.

August 3 – Johnson appears at Durham Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing. His trial is pushed back from August 2015 to

February 10, 2016 – At Bradford Crown Court, Johnson pleads guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and one count of grooming. However, he continues to deny the other two counts of sexual activity.

February 11 – Sunderland sack Johnson.

Yeah I had to look that up too. You're not alone

Child grooming is befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child's inhibitions for child sexual abuse. It lures minors into trafficking of children, illicit businesses such as child prostitution, or the production of child pornography.

grooming is a psychological term for sure

i cannot imagine how it could be a crime (or how you'd prove it)

but you always have to remember, Europe (and the UK) are much more authoritarian and much less free than the US of A

Grooming can probably be proved pretty easily with phone and Internet records, given how much is done with text and social media these days.

I gotta be honest, I thought grooming in this context was going to be a lot more messed up when I first saw that.

All kind of speculation ranging from buying her drinks to friendly texts etc. Kinda weird that he pled guilty to some of them and not the others. The prevailing theory/reporting amongst local journalists is that he was giving off the impression to club and everyone that he was hell bent on fighting this. Now everyone pissed that club looked like they were supporting him only to see him plead guilty.

I think they have similar laws all over the US of A but they are simply not called "grooming".

I know Florida and Alabama have similar ones just from reading in the newspapers where a person was charged with something worded like "using the internet to create a relationship with a child with the intent to lure them into sexual situations".

That's pretty much what "grooming" seems to mean.

I agree that it seems quite big brotherly to police but it certainly exists in the US (though I imagine would be different state by state).
