Why would a team need to have 3 goal keepers on the rosters?

if one gets hurt, you're in a shite position if you only have 1 keeper

if teams took 2 GKs, then it would be a 22-man roster anyway

you have GKs + 20 men

you'd have to expand the rosters to like 35 people and then you'd have scrub backups playing scrub backups. that is the BEST option

with a 23-man roster (and 3 GKs), that's only one starting lineup and one backup lineup.
Why is that not possible? How is that not better than determining the supposed most important sporting event in the world in a manner that bears minimal resemblance to the actual game?

Kicking PKs is a better way than having "scrubs playing scrubs"?

If exhaustion sets in, it sets in for both sides equally. Playing field is level and you encourage pressing for goals to end it. Part of the reason this game ended tied was that Chile showed absolutely 0 interest in scoring goals for the entire overtime period and part of regulation. This wouldn't happen if you FORCE them to score a goal to win.

And you can do things like reactivate players who have been subbed out after a certain number of OT periods. Whatever it takes to let the most important soccer games be decided by playing soccer.

PKs are fine. They just need to do it like the NASL and early MLS days.

Why? Seems like the chances of a GK getting hurt is already rare and getting two hurt is even rarer. And I assume your third string GK means you're fricked anyway so why not get another guy that can play in the field where injuries and subs are more likely?

So you couldn't carry another non GK player if you wanted to only have 2 GKs?

I wouldn't want to go through a tournament of this magnitude with only 2 keepers.

You can bring up to 20 field players, and up to 3 keepers. No more socialist than any other sport.

So are today's PKs. At least the old way represented a breakaway.

It would be a very strange incident for 2 GK injuries. However, the real danger is from red cards and injury combining. Field players can interchange much more easily than a field player could go in goal.

As for being screwed if going to a 3rd GK, the 3rd keeper for most teams is competent. He isn't a star, but he'll make most simple saves but not highlighting worthy ones.

Yeah, I play. If the game is going to come down to penalties, I'd rather make the guy dribble in a bit instead of having it be the guessing game that it is today. 1v1s happen more often than penalties do over the course of a game. Hockey does it right with their penalty shots. I couldn't imagine them having to do a slapshot from between the circles.

You have issues like for real

The MLS was mocked for doing that shite but you didn't even watch back then. It was so bad and the backlash was so bad they had to move away from it. They used it to create excitement to a new league and be different but everyone hated it.

I don't give a shite about backlash or what people around the world think. It's still better than the shite we use today.
