So I'm not saying Gerrard needs to go, but we desperately need a DM

Yeah, we've known this for years unfortunately.

Please bring on Lallana or Markovic. I like the move of going to 3 at the back to create more width and spread things out, but we can't rely on Lucas pushing up from midfield to support the attack.

And I don't know if we have a true "defensive coach" per se, but we need a new one. Sure there's a lot of variables without having a true DM, pushing our fullbacks up high, having an indecisive keeper and rotating CB's, but goddamn at some point you have to take a step back and say we need to fix the ridiculously easy goals we give away on set pieces and on doing other stupid shite. That or I'm all for marching out a 3-1-3-3 or something like that to just get as many goals as possible

It drives me nuts how often Sakho falls down when he hits passes.

Wow. We just don't have it right now. We've got a ways to go. And damn we need Sturridge back and a new GK.

Bright side

-That Borini - Balotelli - Lallana front 3 was actually causing a little havoc and creating some opportunities when they were on together
-We have 1 point less than the same fixtures from last year
-We were gonna need time to gel anyway, might as well get the growing pains out of the way early
-Sturridge and Allen should be back soon
-At least we're not United

Stepping back, we knew we weren't one of the top 2 sides into the league this year. Still a long way to go, and we've got a lot of young guys in the squad, so we're in it for the long haul.

With that said, what are the odds we can use what's left from the transfer window we didn't spend convincing Carragher to come back and coach our backline? And hopefully Valdes proves his fitness soon so we can get that deal done. At the very least, Brendan's got a wake up call to evaluate some things. We did fine in games in the past without Suarez, so what's different now?

Suarez being gone means NOTHING when the defense gives up 3 to West Ham

I agree, just going with how everyone's quick to point out "no Suarez to bail you out now"

Obviously Sturridge being hurt is a big blow, but I think having Allen out is pretty glaring right now too. Wondering how a midfield 3 of Henderson, Allen, and Lallana/Coutinho would work either in a 4-3-3 or diamond

It will be VERY interesting to see if Brendan starts to develop a new role for Stevie. A super-sub that can come in and help kill off games when he has fresh legs and the opponents are starting to tire. I love the guy, and he is an absolute legend, but it's like were playing 10.5 v 11

Stevie should never have been playing. He can't play three full games in a week.

But Rodgers feels he has no choice with Allen out, etc.

Would have been great to pick up Song on loan this window, but thats behind us now.

Song would have been nice. We are missing the hell out of Allen.

So...on the plus side, pretty much all of our competition for top 4 are also playing like crap right now.

This means one of two things - Either we have plenty of time to sort it out and Rodgers teams have always done much better in the second half of the year than the first - we're in good shape.

Or Villa or someone weird will finish 4th.

Everton, Tottenham, and Man U - none have pulled away. ManU has already played all three new PL teams - their fixtures will just get tougher from here.

Arsenal will have their usual month or so with very poor results.

Despite our poor showing, no one is making us pay for it yet.

Chelsea and City are heads and fricking shoulders above everyone else... Arsenal has shown glimpses of being a top 4 team and will likely finish 3rd or 4th when all is said and done....

so that means that we CAN finish top 4, but we need to get healthy and get results, quickly.... Villa and Southampton are going to be our main competition for that top 4 spot, IMO...

it's amazing to me how Southampton, after being decimated this past offseason are still very good...

Eh, it's still September. Let's not read too much into the first month, especially when so many stronger clubs are struggling to gel. As refreshing as it would be to see Villa or Southampton challenge for a top 4 spot, it's just not going to happen. Top 3 & 4 will come down to Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Everton. Just as we thought at the very beginning.
