Yes a win over Portugal or two draws would seal our place in the top two. However a loss to Portugal and a win against Germany technically wouldn't, bc in that scenario us, Germany, and Portugal could all have six points. That almost never happens but it's possible

i find it silly that head to head is the 3rd tie breaker.

I think they try and make it more about all 3 games than the one against the most comparable. I understand it but I also understand where you are coming from.

unless Ghana wins their next 2 & we lose to Germany. highly unlikely, but still not a lock

a tie doesn't really help you with H2H

also soccer, traditionally, looks at the big picture. that's why points, goal differential, goals, etc matter more than 1 game

well neither does goal differential if that is a tie. that's sort of the point of having multiple tiebreakers. not sure im following your point honestly.

goal differential is a much better indicator of how you played over the 3 games than a single game's result

and H2H is worthless when a common soccer result occurs (the tie)

so H2H is just a lot less valuable and is further down the list

Just because a tie is common doesn't make the metric worthless. A lot of first tie breakers are commonly ineffective. It should be what FIFA thinks is the best metric to pick the better team to advance.

i forgot about drawing lots

in 2006 or 2010 (i forget), there was a real threat of drawing lots to see who advanced outof one group

What does that mean? That they pick someone from a hat basically?

Yikes. Is it done in public, or does FIFA do it themselves and then announce the result? Because I could see FIFA fricking that up or being shady as frick with something like that.

How many times has this coin flip been done? My dad has been me asking that question for days.
