Don't know a ton about him either but he has captained west ham, villa, Bolton, and the England u-21 team so he can't be terrible

We'd never think about calling up Edu again. For this reason alone, I fully support his move.

good point, i'm sure he's worth some sort of a shit, but it is curious that he's playing for Ipswich Town

He's pretty old. Already 28, and it will probably take him a couple of years to become a citizen. I doubt we ever see him start in an important came for the USMNT.

I think his time is pretty much up anyway, but more depth is always appreciated.

How would you rank this list: Jones, Williams, Edu, Beckerdreads, Reo-Coker and anyone else who we've recently played in that position not named Michael Bradley

First of all, Nigel Reo-Coker sucks. There are far better players in our pool, including Maurice Edu.

Second of all, you don't automatically gain citizenship as a foreign national with an American spouse once you claim residency. You're eligible for a permanent residency visa immediately but nothing else. Unless we're looking ten years down the line for a never-was English-Sierra Leone 38 year old midfielder, this rumor is Bleacher Report quality journalism.

Wait my sources are telling me this link is to Bleacher Report.

He is provisionally cap-tied to England and can't switch to the US because he wasn't a US citizen when he played for their youth teams.

That's interesting as the article states he would be eligible because he isn't capped.

i guess i'm a bit confused on the difference between being provisionally capped and offically cappped

He has been capped at the youth level meaning he can only switch to a country that he is eligible for citizenship at the time that it happened. Since he doesn't have a parent that is a U.S. citizen his only option other than England is Sierra Leone. Seeing as the article is from Bleacher Report the person who wrote more than likely doesn't know the rule.

Provisionally capped-tied means your still able to make a one time switch because you have only played for the country in a youth tournament or a friendly at the senior level. Playing for the senior team in qualifying or tournament for a confederation championship or World Cup cap-ties you and leaves no option for a switch.

From Rules:

quote:

[assumes] a new nationality and who has not played international football [in a match ... in an official competition of any category or any type of football for one Association] shall be eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfils one of the following conditions:
(a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(d) He has lived continuously for at least two years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant Association.

This part right here is why he can't

Youth tournaments falls into the official competition of any category and therefore makes it impossible for him to switch to the U.S.

He hasn't played a senior match that was official. Has he? I don't really care, but if you read the article it said other sources came up with the idea first. I just can't imagine a bunch of sites, even shitty ones, would just report it when there is zero chance by rules.

No, it has to be a senior cap.
