How in the frick is 3 billion dollars in merchandise sales a poor job. MLB is one of the most profitable leagues in the world. Debate what you wish on the MSB but MLS is nowhere close to being as popular as MLB in the US. This is true with any demographic that is measurable other than a statistical anomoly created on purpose. I know that you are not a parent of a child in this age range or this would be accepted by you. Go ask 10 random teenagers how many MLB players and teams they can name and them repeat the qustion about the MLS. Bet you are shocked with the results if you belive what you have been typing.

I work with elementary and middle school kids. Of various backgrounds. MLB is faltering big time, trust me on that. I can see how if you live in the South you may not see that, but it's true.

And I like baseball. I'm a Braves fan. Baseball was my favorite sport growing up. I loved playing and watching. But the fact that I loved playing was what made it very frustrating to me. Rarely in a baseball game do you get the opportunity to actually play baseball. That's what drove me to basketball and soccer. That was 15+ years ago. And especially in today's ADHD society you better believe it's harming baseball.

I am not a MLB fan at all, have not watched a game in years and probably will not any time soon. I agree my perspective is probably skewed somewhat living in the rural south. The topic was not about the sport of soccer however, it was MLS is as popular as MLB in the US and that is not true anywhere outside of a MLS stadium, youth soccer match, or other enclave. MLB is faltering, I trust you on that, however they have yet to falter so far that MLS has caught up with them YET. This poll is a bullshite attempt to tell a lie and repeat it enough times people will believe it. This was and is my point, not a dispargement of MLS. I stand by my point if you "poll" any true random selection of young people in the USA in 2014 MLB will be many times more popular than MLS. This is why MLB is outselling MLS in merch 10-1. This is a fact not my opinion. By most measurable statistics MLS falls behind NFL, NBA, MLB, Nacsar, NHL, PGA, horse racing, bowling, WWE, and even freaking UFC in popularity, and this is just pro sports. MLS is catching up but still has a long way to go. Of the 100 most watched sporting event in the US in 2013 guess how many involved MLS? How many of the top 200 do you think? The most watched soccer broadcast in the US last year was not even in english nor involved the MLS.

Well, to be fair, the poll was specifically talking about current pre-teen/teen age kids, not the population as a whole. Is it possible that kids these days prefer to watch soccer than baseball? I don't see that as being a stretch at all. Now I would agree, if you talk about the population as a whole, MLB is still more popular, and will remain so, especially while the baby boomer generation is still alive, as they most certainly prefer MLB to MLS. The point of this poll was not to say that MLS is more popular than MLB in the US, but rather that the younger, next generation of fans seems to be steadily increasing in their support of MLS relative to MLB.

I really don't understand how you get bored playing football.

Personally, it's the only sport where I enjoy playing defense more than offense.

It isn't at all attributed to one league having 11 extra teams and a top 5 franchise in the world?

Comparing merch is silly because MLB has been established for 150 years and apparel has gone mainstream way beyond "fans." Why should Europeans/Asians/South Americans who buy Yankees hats be in anyway an indicator of the quality of the spectacle?

I did baseball from age 4 til age 11.

Then I quit and started playing soccer, fell in love, and haven't looked back since.

My dad and I saw LSU win at Omaha in '98, so it's not like we were casual fans. My dad still goes to the games every now and then, but I don't really care to any more.

And sometimes now we watch soccer games together. We've been to several Houston Dynamo matches and will watch games on Saturday mornings too. He's even more enthused by USA games.

The times they be a changin'.

Agreed.

It's pretty remarkable since virtually nobody has grown up watching the MLS with their dad's.

Merch. is applicable because the number one wearers of team apperal in the US is the demographic mentioned in this article. You are making my point for me by mentioning the aditional teams and popularity of them though.
I am done with this argument, you win, MLS is more popular with kids in the USA.

Makes sense. Baseball is an older folks' sport unless you live in rural areas.

Baseball certainly get's a big bump from nostalgia. There's no way the Little League World Series gets television coverage every year if not for that.

Yeah, it's all a big scam by ESPN to destroy baseball and hockey while propping up soccer.
