quote:

The finding is momentous, said Rich Luker, the social scientist and baseball lover who created the study, released on the eve of MLS’s 19th season.

“MLS has been around since 1996,” he said. “It is phenomenal that in just one generation it has gone from zero adherents to tying MLB, especially when you recognize this is the first generation to only know the United States with a professional soccer league. MLS is in their generational DNA.”

quote:

“While there are questions about which direction MLB will go in for 12- to 17-year-olds, we have no reason to believe the trend for MLS will be anything but up.”

I dare someone to post this on the more sports board and wait for the fireworks.

I was trying to find something like this a couple weeks ago for a thread on the MSB but I couldn't. I think it was in a thread that Magic City Blazer started. Where did that guy go anyways? Started like 5 threads a day here and then disappears.

Makes sense. Baseball is an older folks' sport unless you live in rural areas.

The problem with baseball is you never know when it will fricking end. With soccer it's 2 hours and then you can go on with your day.

naw, the problem with baseball is the players are either sitting on their arse or standing still in the field for over 50% of the game.

frick all that

It's kinda funny. As a kid, baseball was my favorite sport for awhile. I loved watching and I loved playing. But I loved playing in the neighborhood more because it allowed me to actually PLAY baseball. I hated the standing around and waiting in my actual games. Same with football. That's probably what eventually made soccer my favorite sport.

How much money was spent is one of the measures. Everyone had less to spend on tickets, t-shirts, etc.

As with most polls what they are not saying is probably more important than what they do state. As in where was poll taken, whom was polled, and what questions were asked. While this may be true I have a hard time believing it. A better measurement IMHO would be to compare merch. sales which are dominated by the same age group and it is not even close. MLS has done a good job and is getting more popular but still had a long way to go to catch up in the US

Merch sales are factored in to the results.

I realize that but it is probably a better indicater than the others used.

If you question kids in the south hockey will be unmentioned. If you question kids in the north baseball is not as popular due to weather etc. If you ask kids during MLS season who just watched a game soccer would seem more popular. I am not here to convnce anyone MLS is not gaining in popularity, I am just saying without the background info a poll is worthless.

Probably not, and it probably doesn't favor baseball, either.

Soccer jerseys are "cool" for kids to wear these days, even if they're not into soccer. Baseball merch...not so much. In the end, I don't think merch sales indicates as much as you think.

I see a lot of MLS jerseys around here.

But a TON of Messi and Ronaldo.

No need to use probably. Quick google search
MLB 3 Billion in merch
MLS 394 Million in merch

I realize you really want to belive this poll but MLS still has a long way to go to catch the big three. Hell both the NHL and NASCAR topped 875 million.

We've already done this on the MSB and apparently you missed it.

But the simple fact is that MLB has done a horrible job of marketing to the younger demographic and they just don't care about baseball.

Plus, the game of baseball itself doesn't really line up with the interests of today's overactive kids. Too much standing, sitting, waiting and not enough actual playing.
