Getting rewarded for his incompetence last week.

Aside from last week, he's an awesome ref.

Was coming here to post this.

He really isn't all that bad, but that Spurs/ Chelsea game did get out of hand.

I feel like he suffered from the Howard Webb syndrome, where decisions he normally makes he didn't because of the size and scale of the occasion. Normally he's a decent enough ref.

+1 - sometimes he doesn't want to give that yellow in bigger matches and then loses control of the match.

You can't really blame him, you'd think he would expect professionals to act like professionals. Not really his fault Spurs went full on crazy. Not sending off Dier though was pretty awful.

If he doesn't expect the vast majority of players to act like petty, bickering brats he should watch a football match here and there.

Yeah, it's certainly the players' faults but the idea of keeping yellows in your pockets early instead of setting the tone when the first questionable challenges/tactical fouls occur tends to escalate tension quickly more times than not.

You're right I'd just rather have a ref like Clattenburg than one who ruins a game with a soft red/PK.

Yea occasionally it may lead to something like what we saw last Wed but I think that's the lesser of two evils compared to the game ruiner.

Especially in a Madrid derby, hopefully he doesn't let the antics that are surely to take place sway him from being reasonable

Atletico's preferred officiating mantra is certainly
just let the lads play

Clattenburg is shite.

But reffing a Chelsea match is tough. So many shite starters and cry baby's in that side. Not to mention they crowd the ref from the first call.

Usually he is superb at letting the game play out and not interfering. But that game, when Spurs decided to just flat give up, was probably something no one, least of all, him, expected. I mean, I'm pretty sure they didn't mount an attack after Hazard scored. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen.

Weak flame, Cesc is the only b in that regard. But the guy played at Arsenal and Barcelona, that'd be hard to overcome for even the strongest of men.
