United makes hundreds of millions of dollars in income per year. For years, the club dedicated large portion of that income to servicing the interest payments on the owners' 750 million pound leveraged buyout. There were some lean years in the transfer market in the latter Ferguson years. After we sold Ronaldo for a record-breaking fee, we replaced him with Antonio Valencia and the rest essentially went back to the owners. Now that the club has cleared some of the owners' debt, I'm not opposed to seeing us spend a chunk of our income on Pogba and other players instead.
ETA: This is not a post meant to lecture any of the United fans in this thread, just my response to those criticizing United for pulling a turnabout and spending big money on players. Also, just came across an analysis showing the club has spent over 1 billion pounds on interest debt payments since the Glazers took over. Give me Pogba instead.

If we sign Pogba.... Do we move Memphis or Matta ?

Mata was probably moving either way. Neither of them play Pogba's position in Mou's system (or, at least, I don't think Mata would), and the Mkhitarayan signing cut into their playing time more than Pogba would.

I'm assuming he'll go 4231 or 433. If it's 4231, he'll have a committed defensive midfielder that will allow Pogba the freedom to get forward from the other pivot spot. Or if he plays 433 Pogba will probably just be the all-action, box-to-box guy. It's possible Mourinho would play him at the 10 at times, but I doubt it. I can't see anybody but Rooney occupying the CAM spot or the advanced position in the 4-3-3.

Right. I'm seeing Zlatan up front, Martial and Mkhitaryan on the wings, Rooney and Pogba in a double pivot, and Schneiderlin sitting behind in a DM role. (Schweinsteiger, Herrera and hopefully Blind will be CMs as well in that trio.)
That doesn't bode well for Mata, who doesn't really look like a winger in his system and would have defensive troubles in central midfield.

Jose already said Rooney is not a midfielder
Looks like his job is on the line fighting for mins at striker.

Didn't see that. And I would agree to an extent. It's just gonna be hard to get minutes in front of Zlatan. And Rashford has had more success in front of goal recently.

He made the comments in his press conference and then talked about wazza making good passes in the euros bc no one was pressuring him.

Now those efforts appear to have been in vain. The dream taken away, with a swipe at Rooney's trademark raking passes for good measure. "You can tell me his pass is amazing but my pass is amazing too without pressure," said Mourinho.

I read that he made Rooney captain again. Not sure how true it is. You have to start your captain eh?

First friendly of the year is this saturday at Wigan. Strongly considering going up there for it then just spending the night in Manchester.

anyone know if the game this weekend will be on US Tv this weekend?

Highlights of the friendly looked good. Bailly is really smooth on the ball for a CB.

Sounds like Miki was the stand out player. Played in the hole, too.

Yeah, he played a lot of good balls, from what I could tell.

I like the idea of
-------------Zlatan------------
Martial----Miki----Rashford

If the Chevy sponsorship ever runs out, I know one American company that won't be in the running:

I would play Rooney in the hole behind the striker and put Mickey on the right where he played for Dortmund.
