Watching the Beckham show and Holy shite, I don’t know would would ever want to play for your national team. I knew about the Saka shite but apparently you guys are real assholes.
First of all if that’s a mfering red card I am the prince of Saudi Arabia. Such a bad call you have to wonder about a payment somewhere. But instead of going after the ref you go after your own and threaten to kill him and his family.
It’s like us Saints fans blaming the receiver on the Ram Scam no call
You really don’t ever deserve to win the World Cup.

Beckham was an easy target. He was young, good looking, had a gorgeous wife and played for a Man U side that people loved to hate, as back then many of your England national team fans were supporters of smaller clubs who never played in Europe, so there's going to be some level of resentment. Lastly, the hooligan element of English soccer fans absolutely despise Argentina because of the Falklands War and Maradona's hand of God goal. It was a perfect storm. Doesn't excuse their behavior, but it does give it some context.

Beckham was the poster boy for united back then and united was easily the most hated team in England

Don't give the ref the decision to make, just don't kick the guy.

But all was forgiven when the Armani underwear ad came out

And still is, despite their fall.
Man City oil $$ is a very close second

Beckham was the villain the English media needed. The best player on the best team at the time. Was all over the news being at United and dating posh spice.

The Three Lions on the chest are as heavy as playing in Knights Armor. Its an impossible job and credit to Southgate to last as long as he has

In absolutely no world was David Beckham the best player at Man Utd in the summer of 1998.
This is the issue with Netflix documentaries, they have to be one sided in order to get the access of the people they are about.

Who was the best player? I don’t think there was one specific guy. Keene, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, even Yorke had his day.

He wasn’t but he was class
The documentary was good insight for people who didn’t watch the game back then and didn’t actually see him play in his prime
He was also a good reminder to people how good he actually was at Madrid
They should have won a lot more

In 98? I would say Andy Cole was their best player, and he wasn't the best England player either.

All this plus it didn’t help that the manager came out in the immediate post game interview and explicitly laid the loss at Beckham’s feet (and accused him of not focusing on the tournament). I’m all for and appreciate coaches that don’t just give coach speak answers and aren’t afraid to be honest about what went wrong with a certain team or game… but simply throwing 1 player under the bus like that is pretty shite.

Who was their best player then? Because it’s between Beckham, Stam, Giggs, or Keane. Becks was already world class in 98-99.

What?
How is the most popular team in England and one of the most popular in the world, the most hated?
Is it because no one hates a team like Luton town? Well no one likes them either or they would have more fans.

It’s the same in the US.
Duke basketball, Alabama football, Notre Dame football…most loved and most hated.
