quote:

That business model and this financial trajectory suggests that MLS’s sea of red ink is either a loss leader or a Ponzi scheme, and it’s not always easy to tell the difference between the two until it’s too late. Several sports economists, though, aren’t optimistic. “The best indicator of expansion franchise worth is success at the bottom of the league” in revenues, says Stanford economist Roger Noll. For MLS, “that still looks more like AAA baseball except for a few million per year more in TV revenue.”

Just wanted to congratulate you in advance on the Dead Horse Award you're almost certainly going to win when WSE gets the 2 Chainz Soccer Board Awards going this year. You've officially beaten this topic dead in a way that SCH can only dream of doing with Etihad attendance.

Man, I ain't got any time to do them right this year. I should've done them like a month ago.

But the committee might give a special lifetime achievement award for this.

Deadspin has such an institutional hatred for MLS that it's hard for me to take anything on there seriously. I'm sure the post makes some decent points, but I ain't gonna click.

I think I would pay Chicken a good amount of money to code a way to prevent these things from happening:

- DS from talking about FFP, pro/rel, and MLS
- SCH from talking about Man City spending or attendance, MLS, and picture quality
- TNBhoy from talking about Celtics or Rangers

This shite is so much worse than the World Cup posters who say offside is a dumb rule.

What a frustrating article. Let's start with getting facts correct.

quote:

vs. $99 million for all of MLS.

Where the frick do they get $99m? It's closer to $200. LINK Which actually puts MLS higher as far as averages go when compared to most leagues.

So is David Beckham an exception? He will be paying next to nothing to get his team. And what about Adidas paying $700m for uniform rights? Total ponzi scheme, right?

Also the whole amortize your franchise down to "lose money" for tax purposes is nothing new. MLB owners do it. NBA owners do it. It's an accounting trick. While half the owners probably are "losing money", it's not in the $100m per year. It's not this bleak scenario Mr. Noll makes it out to be.

Also, MLS owns SUM, which is only valued at around $1.8 billion. A cash cow in itself. No mention of that in the article!! Because it's a short-sighted view of MLS. Poor journalism. But it is Deadspin, afterall.

I think Baloo has admin powers. Hopefully, he is the only admin. Great poster and smart guy.

Maybe the admins not like snack threads on here. I never saw the posts.

An occasional jab about City's attendance can be funny. The rest is just so tiresome.
