Looks like it will be Vietnam. UAE vs. Japan will be the other semi-final.

I'm assuming it will be a KOR v. JPN final. I can't imagine the stress and pressure Son feels.

Idk how true this is, but everything i’ve seen on Reddit has been people saying Japan has a very weak team there, in regards to their actual U-23’s.

That’s a really bad penalty and even worse goalkeeping!

As a huge Arsenal fan I hope he wins. This sucks man. He’s such a great player to watch on the pitch not only bc of his skill but bc he’s so passionate and loves the game. That being said frick Tottenham.

I respect this, but the feeling is mutual.

Agree, he's the only tolerable player in their whole set up.

While I ultimately hope SK win for the sake of not seeing a career essentially ended, I do think it would be very interesting if SK lost just to see what would transpire.

Would Son serve or would he alienate SK, his family and friends?

The SBN article I read suggests that the public and government opinion is starting to shift from the hardline that they have had in the past. It also mentioned that Son isn't qualified for active duty due to not finishing school, so he would be sitting behind a desk, stapling papers and shite. That makes it even more crazy.

Yup. He has only finished middle school and therefore can’t play for the military team in the Korea’s top flight.

FWIW, all of this is mentioned in the Reddit post on the first page. I would rather that person get credit than SB get clicks for basically taking information from there.

If anyone was wondering how much this means to Sonny, check out his reaction at the final whistle.

I don’t see how they could not make an exception for him. He provides so much more national pride and value to South Korea being an international soccer star than being a guy who sits behind a desk in their military.

It’s pretty simple, Korean people consider this the one thing that connects them all.

Everyone is required to serve and almost all do, including celebrities, unless you do something extraordinary on the ‘world stage’. IE. bring home a medal from the Olympics or win gold at the Asian Games.

Korean people value ‘duty’ and I personally admire everyone over there who is well known who ultimately does serve.
