Man, yall jumped all over that statement . I didn't say anything about him changing his philosophy, or style of play. Of course we know who he is and what we'd be getting.

What I meant to say, but didn't flesh out earlier, was that it wouldn't be unreasonable for the club to set out its priorities for youth development and ask Mourinho to put more effort into that side of things than he has in the past. If he's not up for it, then maybe it wouldn't work out. Also, could put a no eye-gouging clause into his contract if you're worried about his demeanor.

In the end, both sides may have to give up some ground for it to work. i was only insinuating earlier that it didn't have to be a case of United throwing away all its priorities to get Mourinho for a short-term fix. Could ask a few questions the other way as well

My bad. I was just talking. I tend to get real wordy. Sorry.

Regardless, I don't think United would look to Mourinho if they weren't willing to sacrifice youth. Real Madrid have one of the best youth academies in the world but they straight up don't care about playing those players. If they go for Mourinho, it will be a short-term fix because that is who he is. Maybe he wants to shed that label. I don't know. It seems that targeting Simeone or Pochettino would be a better investment. Simeone in particular would emphasize youth, but his teams are absolutely brutal.

It's fairly clear that the much touted "United way" was more "Fergie's way.

That's false and you should know better.

It's been the United way since the 50's

lol at the people downvoting don't even know their history.

Like the Glazer's give a shite.

But I was more referring to the style of play employed by Fergie rather than the youth policy, which we both know can be hit or miss. Hence my reference to style of play of Arsenal under Graham and Arsenal under Wenger.

Floating the club on the stock market means that they are committed to winning immediately and any move toward Mourinho is clearly about winning immediately.

United were always know for playing attacking and entertaining football even when we sucked during the 70's and 80's.

I'll get more into my thoughts on the op later.
Have to go into work for a little bit.

Right, but even if you ask Mourinho to play attacking football, he is going to play the counter-attack. He did it at Real Madrid, who fire coaches for not winning pretty enough, and escaped because he was the only one they felt could stand up to Barca. Otherwise, nothing in his history indicates that he will play anything other than pragmatic football.

So to answer the OP.

Yes there have been way worse mismatches than United with LvG.

His philosophies match the club except the current style of play. LvG has played attacking football in the past clubs and we saw how good we could look with in in the 4-3-3 last year.

But when it comes to building a squad with young and multi functional players. He has been spot on.

When integrating academy grads he has done a fantastic job. A better job than SAF did his last few years. When the youth set up was almost neglected. He has also got the wheels going on a complete overhaul/upgrade of the academy. Our youth set up is already one of the best in the country and he still says its not enough.

Replacing him with Jose goes against all the club values. But who knows what is going to happen.
