It didn't look intentional or avoidable to me. I would have been surprised to see the ref give that.

Ivory Coast in getting the ball in front of Japanese goal a good bit... But they are blocking everything and packing in the box.

If I was IC coach I would be telling them to send crosses in the box every time down there. No more rips or trying to go 1v1. All crosses and headers.
