Future UCL/UEFA Spots

Apologies if this topic has been discussed already but have we talked about the struggles of English clubs in Europe(insert Arsenal joke here) potentially costing them the 4th UCL spot by 2018?
ESPN article here
Basically, Italy has been gaining ground on England lately for their 4th UCL spot. City is the only club left that could gain points for either country this year, but the margin will be thin with the start of next year's competitions regardless.
If the season ended today here's the guaranteed teams tasked with keeping that advantage:
1. Leicester City
2. Tottenham
3. Arsenal
4. Manchester City
5. West Ham United
Obviously plenty of things/teams can change for England and Italy, but it's kinda interesting to think of that all-important 4th UCL spot being decided by the success of West Ham or Leicester City in Europe.

It's definitely going to be tight. Italy hasn't done themselves any favors this season. Juventus hanging on against Bayern would have been a boost no doubt as they could have beaten several teams in the quarters.
But your point is valid. Next season's UCL squad for England could be weak sauce. Europa League could actually be a stronger lineup, but how serious would they take the competition.
Pay close attention next season to direct confrontations between England and Italian clubs. Huge matchups if they take place.

IF WHU beats out City for the 4th spot, next year is gonna be a shite show for the PL teams in CL play.

There is also a chance that one of the Europa League spots could go to a Watford/Crystal Palace/Everton if they were to win the FA Cup correct? Again, not exactly team with a lot of European experience.

There is also talk of having a fourth spot added permanently for England and Italy, for TV revenue reasons.
So even if England falls behind in the coefficient, it may not lose out overall.
But I have to think that change needs to be made now and not five minutes after England is passed by.

If only my second favorite team in Spain Villarreal could surpass RM in the third spot.

If the Whites can muster up a win vs Barca coming up then that's highly doubtful but if they don't I'd guess RM is throwing everything at UCL so anything could happen.

Obviously in the American market I'd guess.

Yeah, Italy lost the third spot following pretty much the recipe you mention:
Overachieving clubs rotating into CL each year along with bigger clubs blowing off EL to concentrate on league.
Clubs hardly ever do well in CL right away. . . look at the recent trajectory of even talent laden Dortmund, Juve, Man City who seemed to need a couple of years of CL play before getting their feet under them.
I still think Italy will have a hard time overtaking the EPL next season since they have the same problems with Europa clubs (likely Inter, Fiorentina, AC Milan) being much more concerned with getting into a CL spot in league play since, unfortunately, most Italian fans seem to not really care about EL in the least.
Also, much is made of the EPL needing to help its clubs in European play in regards to winter break but Serie A could really help its clubs by not starting the season after the first international break.
That everyone else is 2 weeks ahead in training really hurts Italian clubs in the qualifying playoff round.

Winter break kills Russian clubs
When Zenit played Benfica in the UCL, they had not played a real match in 3 months

Yeah, the winter break in the Russian league is the most damaging of any European league schedule for their teams in Europe.
Unfortunately, that later summer schedule won't change in Italy because the entire country closes down and goes on vacation in those weeks.

I'm all for a couple more clubs from the bigger leagues to come into the CL playoff round if it diminishes the chances of the horrible "super league" idea the Bayern management et al is pushing.
It would still result in money making, high profile matches for some smaller European clubs to get a CL playoff tie with a Liverpool, Inter, ManU or AC Milan.
Agree that it's going to be bit too "obvious" though if the rule to allow more clubs changes the minute Serie A replaces EPL.
