Haven't followed soccer much before this years world cup, but I intend to change that. By observing the other teams and comparing them to team USA it seems we are not that far off. Correct me if I'm wrong but it would seem a couple more talented players and we could make a run next time around.

I've been guilty of really just following Serie A, EPL and more recently Bundesliga and pretty much ignoring MLS but intend to change that as well.

As far as the USA's future, I think we're still a long way away from having the quality all over the pitch + depth to be a real threat to take out 2-3 great sides consecutively but we're at least a serious contender against anyone which is already amazing progress for US soccer.

However, I think that this year's CUP was extremely open. In 2014, I expect that sides like Italy, England, Germany, Brazil ect will be stronger in addition to there being no fall off among the better sides and so, for me, I see this Cup as a real lost chance to take advantage of draw that may be the easiest we'll ever see.

I don't think we have a LONG way to go. I think the gap is closing. We have had pretty decent World Cup runs in the past four (excluding '06)

I think our talent is a ton better than it has been. I know that England is having problems and don't have a TON of new talent to come around. I am really good friends with two Brit's and I asked them about the future of their soccer team and they were both pessimistic.

In 1998 we finished dead last in the tournament. 1990 was also 0-0-3, and 1994 wasn't really impressive at all.

And they should be. In my opinion, by the time they're hosting the world cup, we'll have a better team than they will.

We got to the knockout rounds, at least.

As a host team, who finished in third place in the group. We were really no better than South Africa was this time around, and South Africa may have had a harder group as well.

Two knockout rounds in the last three World Cups. Isn't THAT bad compared to prior. We got hosed in the Germany match.

We've come so far since we qualified for the 90 cup. It took a near miracle for us to qualify out of concacaf. Now we run that shite. We don't even have second generation American soccer players. We've got a bright future going forward.

I hope so but the English fans I know think they have a long way to go too but they're also looking at it from a winning the cup standpoint and not merely fielding a team that could possibly make the semis.

England always overrates their team. The team they had this year needed a lot of work to even reach the semis. If they're concerned, they have a lot to be concerned about.

It's a mistake to say that we finished dead last in the '98 World Cup. There are over 200 countries that enter the WC. We did finish last in the Finals, but that is not last in the tournament.

Colombia was a favorite to win the cup in 94 and US knocked them out of the tournament by beating them 2-1. They tied a strong swiss team and they were ousted in the round of 16 by champs Brazil and lost 0-1. I don't think that is unimpressive.

They went 1-1-1 as the host in a group with Columbia, Switzerland, and Romania. Columbia finished dead last and their tournament was considered a huge disaster. Really no better than South Africa's tournament this time around, IMO.

We had a relatively young team this World Cup and most of our best players should be back for 2014. Our player development should improve over the next four years and we should have some more confident central defenders.

except we advanced and had a respectable 1-0 loss to the eventual champ.

I like South Africa. They have an uphill battle, too though. They were banned until 94 or something like that.

We advanced because they took some third place teams. We were really right about where South Africa was.

And I'll give us credit for playing tough defensively against Brazil, but I'm pretty sure the US didn't get a shot on target in that game.
