Yeah. They're just surrendering the manager experience to Football Manager.

They'll do something new every now and then to keep non-FUT players around. But I ended up playing a lot more online in 16 than ever before because career mode just felt so stale after several months.

Im a huge FUT fan, so i totally get it, but thats why i brought up the examples from Madden. It seems year after year Madden gets more attention in the development dept but, without looking at numbers, id imagine FIFA is the larger seller. Though i guess Maddens version of FUT isnt the same money maker as FIFAs.

Its not like theyd have to start from scratch. Just copy what madden is doing and change up some details. And if FIFA had a robust career mode again, i dont see how that would effect sales negatively. There is def a big market for offline modes. FUT isnt going to be less popular if manager mode was improved, but it could def move more units to casuals curious about the game and generate some needed goodwill from a a neglected portion of the user base.

The Journey sounds cool and all, but all that development time went into a feature that most players will prob play through once and be done with it.

I still don't see the appeal of controlling just one player in a soccer game with the rest of your teammates being CPU. That just seems mind-numbingly frustrating.

Hopefully it has the option to let you control the whole team like the career mode.

Agreed. Though i wonder if itll have the option to all be user controlled, like the player careers.

Off your point with Madden, I wonder how a move to more of the RPG elements of CFM would work for FIFA fans. The big decisions feature (like contract negotiations, benching players, injuries, etc.) would be cool. I thought with managers being implemented this year, there might be a move to make it more fresh by updating the interactions and how the transfer market works. Like long transfer sagas that could stretch across windows or pressure from fans to upgrade a certain position or else. There's a framework there for that, but I don't know if it's ever going to go that direction.

The demands for youth development, success, branding, etc. could give career mode a better feel if CPU teams actually played to what their goals are—Bilbao only concentrating on youth development, teams like Southampton being more of selling clubs, etc. It just gets old seeing every top-division team have like $70M transfer budgets after a few seasons because they stockpiled. CPU teams need to do more selling and buying of role players.

What's your house rules?

In my Russian careers I follow league rules: 6+5 in the 11. 6 foreigners plus 5 Russians on the pitch, including substitutions.

15 Russians on the team

Must have 5 Eastern European players. Former Soviet Union countries count even if they are not "European"

Must have at least 7-U23 players, 5 must be Russian

They need to do something about Bayern selling every good player in one year and starting Patrick Weihrauch for years.

Also, I'm probably the only person who doesn't give a frick about FUT. I never got into it and probably never will. I like manager mode. I want a better manager mode. Get off my lawn.

In my careers Alaba always goes to Juve and Muller goes to City or Arsenal.

i got into FUT a little this year but there are too many shenanigans with it (like games where your team turns into 1-footed retards with negative touch and who are slow as me running around)

i mainly play online, H2H.

i'll usually run through a career or 2 on manager mode, but manager mode is just way too easy until you get promoted and run into the unrealistic expectations. often, though, even if you get relegated if you've been there a bit you won't get fired for just that, and it gives you another year in the minors to develop your young players

then you get promoted again, your guys are usually ripe to sell, and you can completely re-stock your team and stay up. then when the next generation is ready, you'll win the league

also, anyone else with the Beta having access issues to the forums? I go to the page and it just says i need to download the game then a blank area where the discussion board is supposed to be. i don't even know how to send the question to EA

also for everyone else, here are my thoughts after about 10 games. i'm typing em out here so that i can add to the discussion on the FIFA boards whenever i get access to them

the game/engine is pretty loose in terms of player control. it's harder to change directions and sometimes when you have the ball, a pass/shot takes a second to get off (which can be annoying when i get into the other issues)

defenders get to run you the frick over and offensive players seem to always have the worse of a collision (even if you have a beast like nainggolan or pogba). the absolute best strategy i've seen is to just super press b/c you get faster guys against slower guys and since you don't have the ball you can mug the offensive players with impunity

penalties are impossible. i won't get into details but they're different and impossible

crosses are back to being simple and easy and i've had a lot of issues dealing with cross/head offenses (and one of these was with juve and their stacked back line that shouldn't be dominated by benzema, modric, etc)

L1 switch still has issues but the directional switch is back to making sense again. i'll never, NEVER get why they tampered with this in 16 to where it literally fricks up all the time. what was once second nature (And i mean for like 5+ years) is now a guessing game that easily takes your defenders out of position

i've had some issues with trying to get my shots perfect (esp aimed shots) but part of that is the engine/momentum stuff i wrote about earlier, i belivee

through balls in the air seem to work again (i didn't play 15 but i heard they were almost a glitch in 15 and 16 basically neutered them)

oh and the biggest issue is the keeper and blocking shots. the keepers dive for a lot of balls in this game and the deflection almost always puts the ball in play. when you get the chance, rip a shot b/c the keeper will deflect it into play (instead of out of bonds or catching it) like 90% of the time and the offensive players get an open goal as the keeper gets up. if you shoot enough, you'll plenty of easy scoring opportunities

Yep, it takes like 3 days for "Juventus keen on Alaba signing" then Boateng goes to Chelsea, Muller leaves, Lewandowski usually leaves. Bayern will spend a ton of money on Ozil, Neuer will be sold in most manager modes as well.

The thing about offline/manager modes is that it's the only thing that you can do that feels like you're actually playing a realistic version of soccer. With the right sliders and difficulty tweaks, you get games that play differently. Online, most games turn into an arcade mode of counter attacks and ridiculous shots.

Online can be fun, but offline against a good version of the CPU is the best IMO. I'm hoping that the new engine and the few career mode tweaks actually give us a variety of challenges. Teams buying and selling more like their true selves and playing like them on the field, too.

And, as always, you've gotta put some restraints on yourself in the name of realism in order to keep manager modes entertaining. Anyone can go buy the best young players and then turn themselves into a super team. It's better to try to handicap yourself most places and give yourself a challenge.

I love pro clubs. I wish they'd make it 11v11 again. That was some fun stuff!

Getting stamina up is a little frustrating. I'm out of gas by halftime most of the time.
