Barcelona. Is. Screwed. (Update 1-18-24 on page 3)

Barcelona has completely screwed itself over in the long-term with its "levers" that will siphon off money in perpetuity that will prevent the club from revenue necessary to remain at its current status. A lot of this plan was also banking on immediate success this year, because further revenue shortages would escalate all the debt used this offseason. Well, they fricked.

Remember, Barcelona had to threaten criminal prosecution for "Fraudulent deals" made when players already deferred money to help Barca in the past.
By then, they'll have sold off 75% of their future TV rights to keep the lights on

The last few weeks had brought back-to-back Champions League group defeats to Bayern Munich and Inter, but Barcelona had told themselves that they had been unlucky. On Wednesday, they could turn things back in their favour.
Ninety minutes of huge excitement and chaos later, it became clear Laporta’s plan to mortgage the club’s future to become instantly competitive had not worked.
quote:
Laporta said that “together we have saved Barca”, reminding everyone of how the club had been almost bankrupt when he replaced Josep Maria Bartomeu as president in March of last year.
He explained how using various financial levers to borrow from projected future earnings would create a “virtuous circle”, in which the club will be boosted to success on and off the pitch and a winning team will grow its revenues so much that paying off the loans will not be difficult.
quote:
A more realistic summation of Barcelona’s finances came when the club’s financial vice-president Eduard Romeu admitted last week that “without the income from the ‘levers’, last year we would have lost €106million, and this year (the loss would be) €210million”.
quote:
Most obviously, their squad still costs way more than it should. In 2021-22, the total spent on salaries and amortised transfer fees was €518million but the budget confirms that, in 2022-23, it is up by 27 per cent to €656million after the signings of Lewandowski, Raphinha and five more new players in the summer.
Remember, Barcelona had to threaten criminal prosecution for "Fraudulent deals" made when players already deferred money to help Barca in the past.
quote:
Romeu suggested last week that it will be 2024-25 before the club’s situation is “normalised.
By then, they'll have sold off 75% of their future TV rights to keep the lights on

My son went to one of those camps last year but we didn’t go to the one in Barcelona. He got the “invite” again this year even though he didn’t attend one of the camps here. I know they’re probably only loosely affiliated with whatever company runs the camps here, if at all, but in my mind the MOT household is contributing to their financial ruin by not taking part in the money grab.

Looking forward to the 30 for 30

Yeah there will definitely be books and documentaries about this era.

Can't wait
You just knew something was screwy with all the signings this summer based off the money from their "deals"
What a bunch of idiots

Nothing was more satisfying than when Luis Figo left Barça for Madrid in the late 90's/early 2000's. Seeing the Barça fans melt was glorious

The documentary about that was great

I didn't know they had one. I'll have to look that up

It was just insane. Really climaxed when they threatened FdJ with a criminal investigation for "fraud", for a deferral he agreed to a couple years earlier...to help them from the same issue. They were literally trying to rob him of money he deferred to help them.
The craziest part is that he wanted to stay there after that
But yeah, to balance the books to register players in 2022, they sold 25% of their TV rights (for the rest of their club's history) and 25% of their media arm.
The article I linked says they may sell off a portion of their museum to create revenue to offset CL revenue losses
Barca has literally killed their future for ONE window.

And you always know deep down that outside of one year UEFA gifted you those titles. This latest news warms my heart.

Imagine thinking that Barcelona needed to be gifted anything while Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, etc were there. Don’t tell me you were pulling for those Ramos-led thugs at Madrid at the time.
