My biggest issue is that there's already a red and black team in MLS called United.

But I like that it's not a goofy mascot or an overboard European prefix or suffix.

Nothing snobbish about saying Atlanta United FC sounds strange.

True. We could have been Royal Atlanta or Atletico Atlanta.

That's not why you were bashing it though. You were bashing it because it's not united in the exact sense that European clubs adopt the moniker United.

that's one reason bc it doesn't make sense

and it just doesn't sound right. Almost sounds forced.

He would have to bash his own club then. SCH is starting good banter because he knows Atlanta United is going to be the Daddy United to his little DC United.

Um no b/c the Virginia, DC and Maryland region which all support the same teams. So it makes a little more sense.

To you, maybe.

Atlanta's name means it wants to unite all the different cultures of fans in the city.

DC's name means it wants to unite the three different geographic areas, which pretty much blend together as the same metro area. (Although I wouldn't be surprised to see if that name meaning got retconned after just picking the one that sounded European.)

ETA: LINK

quote:

During a lunch with his US Soccer partner colleagues, while talking about options for the name, someone in their employ blurted out, “Well, why don’t you just call it United? That’s what all the soccer teams are called.” Though there was certainly more to the team’s branding than this single moment of snark, the group tried out the sound of D.C. United in that moment. Payne added it the list of possible names, and it eventually won out over candidates like Justice, Force, and Spies.

Hard to believe they passed on a great name like the Spies.

The dawn of MLS was just one big shrug emoji.
