Atlanta United held a press conference yesterday to release details about their under-construction practice facility in Marietta.

Located on a sprawling 33 acres off Interstate 75, the headquarters and training facility will feature six fields: three turf and three grass embedded among the surrounding forest

The headquarters building features offices, an indoor-outdoor gym, locker room, and dining area, within 30,000 square feet. With work underway, the $60-million facility should be ready a year from now.

The training ground will hold open training sessions and tournaments, as well as host visiting national and international clubs. Designed by Atlanta-based architecture firm TVS Design, it will be home to the club’s youth academy, first team players and club staff.

The design of the site and club headquarters allows for future growth and will foster an aspirational environment, giving the academy players the opportunity to observe and interact with the first team.

“Youth development will play a critical role in the overall success of our club,” said Atlanta United president Darren Eales. “We put a lot of thought into the design of the training ground to ensure that it provided our first team with a top-flight training environment, as well as an open, collaborative and aspirational atmosphere for our young academy players.”

quote:

"It will give us credibility and visibility in world soccer," he said. "International teams will train here when they play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, [and] we'll have the academy team training with our first team. They'll get to see their heroes training."

quote:

Crafting partnerships with leading area youth clubs, ATL UTD are already getting their youth academy off the ground and the new complex is designed to guide and groom youth prospects towards their eventual goal of a professional career. Each Under-18 player will be mentored by a member of the first team, a system that will be replicated from top to bottom through the academy.

“We want the kids to get glimpses of their first-team heroes,” Eales said. “We want everyone to prepare to be professionals. It’s about getting academy players to the first team and the matches.”

Saw these yesterday and got pumped.

I think we should make an official Atlanta United thread sometime soon as they start to build up the staff and roster in the coming months. Name it after BraveTiger225.

Looks great. I know Atlanta well. My hope is that this is a team that the area embraces. The other sports all have fans of other teams as people started moving there starting in the early to mid-70s. I was one of them.

I think that this is going to be a great franchise for MLS, as will Minnesota. Give a team to St Louis, they deserve it.

I tend to agree and I think you have struck upon a key point. Atlanta is a city comprised of people that have always lived there and people that have moved there from other places in the USA (and the world) due to the high quality jobs present. When people move to Atlanta from Boston they tend to bring their loyalty to the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics with them; when people move to Atlanta from Chicago they tend to bring their loyalty to the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls.

However, soccer is a completely different animal. The MLS clubs are still young, growing, and establishing outreach; they are not entrenched in their communities yet. Therefore, people may not have those roots to clubs in their former cities and nearby towns. Also, this Atlanta club is being born, it is organic, and everyone has a chance for it to be "their" club from the beginning. It is an exciting time to be present at the creation and 29,000 season ticket deposits, a beautiful architectural showpiece stadium, and a world class training ground with community and academy outreach is a lot to make one inspired.

I feel the same regarding Minnesota and future clubs like Sacramento. Those are going to be great clubs for MLS.

Pretty shrewd. I always heard this was a state of the art baseball facility, and thought WTF?

I guess that was the way to avoid price inflation (owners of the lands would know it´s for something of great projection, and not some ´service for our kids´).

Thank goodness please hurry up and build it and re-develop the rest of that area as well. This is like 2 miles from where I live so I'm pretty pumped.

They have started their academy so hopefully this will be up and running soon.

Where is it going to be exactly? I grew up in Marietta, just curious.

It's on frankin road between Delk road and south marietta parkway. It backs up to I75 and you can see the grading through the trees from the interstate.

Also they are building a separate park further down Franklin road that will have three more soccer fields.

Yea I imagine the rivalries will be DC and Orlando City. Get ready for the United Derby.

You don't know what they are united from you say? Well my friend they are united from the rich tapestry of peoples, cultures, diversity, optimism, and growing influence and power that make up the great city of Atlanta.

We have gone over the United aspect ad nauseum. It is about the city as a melting pot and being United, which is obviously not the traditional sense of the word in the sport. However, there is a 0% chance it will change.

Everything about ATLUTD has been perfect thus far except for the name and the turf field. They are saying and doing all the right things with regards to how the franchise should be run, tons of fan interest, fair ticket prices, and good facilities (except for the turf thing, which I can live with).

It's growing on me now, mainly because of all the backlash it's getting on here.

I think Atlanta FC would sound much better

But its still better than calling your club the typical American franchise type name like the Fire, Galaxy, Revolution etc.
