Arsène Wenger has proposed a debate about the pressures young footballers are under as he is far from convinced that today’s environment for hothousing talent is the best way to prepare tomorrow’s players.

“The modern education in the youth teams today has many questions,” he said. “Do we specialise them too early? Do we give them too much coaching too early and not enough freedom? Do we isolate them too early from other sports? Should they not practise other sports at an early age and transfer their skills to our sport? Do we isolate them too early from normal social life?

“Would it not be better for them to go to a normal school and practise after school rather than at 16 give them every day only football as a professional life, knowing about the success rate?”

“We know that in France 12% make their living in football, in the first, second, third or fourth division. That means 88% are there every day living like a professional football player and not having a future.

“Another question that raises is how we manage the parents as they have a lot of expectations and put a lot of pressure on the boy. They are under pressure very early to be successful and come in with the fear of not being successful every morning.”

Very solid questions. I think kids who get scholarships should also have their education paid for if they don't make it as professionals.

So basically he wants to become more like the US and have kids go to school and then sports after school.

Does he mean 12% of France's population make living wages playing soccer? That's crazy.

No that's the percentage of kids in academies who make it as pros at any level.

Can't imagine I'd want to go to a place where the passage of the BAR exam was 12%. Yeesh.

He would never do it and they would probably not want him to do it, but Arsene would be a fricking tremendous FIFA president.

It doesn't help when you have U-18 kids at some youth set up making more than League One players. Cough Cough City....

No, don't be a smart arse and try and have a actual discussion.

They have been heavily criticized in England about their youth set up approach. They have some great things like the top level education the kids are getting. But they have been paying kids like they are full on pros. They tried poaching one our kids by offering him a few grand a week ( it was actually 11k). When kids at most youth set ups are on a few hundred a week.

why is this a bad thing? especially given the fact that...

11k a week for a 16 year old academy player is a huge problem.

To the point City covers their wages when they go on loan, when that's not how loans are supposed to work.

has nothing to do with offering 16 year olds insane money that not even regular people make. But yes the school they send the 8 to 16 years olds is very very good.

Also at 16 these players don't have to go to school anymore

That your club was willing to pay a 16 year old academy player that much a week.

Not sure what's so hard to comprehend.

Tactics and wages like that are not good for youth players in the long run.

just because you keep saying "its not good" or "that's a problem" doesn't really make it the case. maybe i'm having a hard time comprehending because you are stating your opinion as if it is a fact.

why is that a problem and why is it not good for youth players in the long run?

is city breaking any rules by doing this?
