What's to stop Mexico from adding a similar tarriff for American products going into their country thus hurting American businesses? That's how trade wars happen.
Can someone explain how exactly this 20% tarriff is supposed to work?

Do they not already have a tariff on US based products?

It's a negotiating tactic to scare the Mexican government

No one knows. What we do know is that presently there is no 20% across the board tariff on Mexican goods, and it's probably not very likely to take the shape some on here think it is.

So you think access to the Mexican market is on the same level as access to to the US market?

You don't think it can be increased?

Do you even trade deficit bro?
Posted on 1/29/17 at 10:34 am to stendulkar
You do understand we have a trade deficit with Mexico and that 80% of their exports come to The United States?
We have all the leverage and they know it. They will pay they just dont want it discussed publicly which President TRUMP has agreed to.

Why does Mexico get to tax US imports but the US can't tax Mexico imports?

Well, of course they could increase it, but at the same time they are already taxing imports at a higher rate than we are, so in reality it would be leveling the playing field.

It works in theory because we have a shitload more to offer Mexico.
It also achieves its goal because it disincentivizes durable-goods manufacturers from using maquiladoras.
The desired result will be cooperation with and payment for the Wall.
It is a negotiating tactic at this point.

You're comparing 80% of one countries exports to 1.5% of the others. That would be a trade massacre, not a trade war.

It's around 16% right now on some products, not sure if it varies.

Now some perspective on all those big numbers. Exports to Mexico account for <2% of the US economy, Exports from Mexico account for >30% of the Mexican economy. If they stop buying our stuff, it will hurt a little, if we stop buying theirs...It will completely obliterate their country. They can't win a trade war here.

Do you know the current tariff of Mexican imports? My google only shows hundreds of articles about the proposed increase.

Mexico also uses a VAT also so they are essentially enforcing taxes we do not against us.
