You're too stupid to realize that IF this article is true, then this means Flynn wasn't working with any Russians. Think, retard. If he's hiring 3rd party American hackers to track down the Russian hackers who got Hillary's emails, then he couldn't have been working with the goddamn Russians. LOLOL, you poor idiot.

Ya' might want to reel that one back in and think about it for a few minutes.

I did. Which is why I said "we'll see".

You said the guy never claimed Flynn was involved - but he did claim that.

No, seriously, you.

Follow the easy logic, dummy.

If you're already colluding with the Russians, then why the hell do you need to hire American hackers to find the Russians you're supposedly already colluding with??

You can't seriously be this fricking retarded, can you?

Emphasis mine.

Sounds like a lone wolf and Flynn was apparently of little help in his search.

That's a strike out.

Next batter.

"What role, if any, Mr. Flynn may have played in Mr. Smith’s project is unclear. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Smith said he knew Mr. Flynn, but he never stated that Mr. Flynn was involved."

When I first saw this the headline said Flynn "associate" was after Clinton emails from hackers. Then opened it up and was like... Lol

There is a whole cottage industry out there for low lifes seeking the #Russians & Trump holy grail. I saw a hilarious article that covered some of the people who have been scammed and how much money they lost. There is literally nothing there. This has been more investigated than Bigfoot.

Fake news but even if true, so what?

Some guy was surfing hacking web sites which are accessible to everyone including the media and was asked to inform Flynn if they found anything? Oh noz!!!

Getting warmer - the WSJ is now following up yesterday's story linked in the first post of this thread with this update about a document Peter W. Smith used to try to recruit a cybersecurity analyst to try to authenticate Clinton emails.

quote:

WASHINGTON—A longtime Republican activist who led an operation hoping to obtain Hillary Clinton emails from hackers listed senior members of the Trump campaign, including some who now serve as top aides in the White House, in a recruitment document for his effort. The activist, Peter W. Smith, named the officials in a section of the document marked “Trump Campaign.” The document was dated Sept. 7, 2016. That was around the time Mr. Smith said he started his search for 33,000 emails Mrs. Clinton deleted from the private server she used for official business while secretary of state.

Officials identified in the document include Steve Bannon, now chief strategist for President Donald Trump; Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager and now White House counselor; Sam Clovis, a policy adviser to the Trump campaign and now a senior adviser at the Agriculture Department; and retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, who was a campaign adviser and briefly was national security adviser in the Trump administration.

WSJ

Meanwhile, Ben Wittes at Lawfare has now published a first-person account from Matt Tait, the British Cybersecurity expert who Smith had approached to develop a relationship to authenticate emails who was the source for the second WSJ story. While the first story was vague with regard to Smith's relationship to Flynn, Tait says this about this following conversations with Smith.

quote:

Although it wasn’t initially clear to me how independent Smith’s operation was from Flynn or the Trump campaign, it was immediately apparent that Smith was both well connected within the top echelons of the campaign and he seemed to know both Lt. Gen. Flynn and his son well. Smith routinely talked about the goings on at the top of the Trump team, offering deep insights into the bizarre world at the top of the Trump campaign. Smith told of Flynn’s deep dislike of DNI Clapper, whom Flynn blamed for his dismissal by President Obama. Smith told of Flynn’s moves to position himself to become CIA Director under Trump, but also that Flynn had been persuaded that the Senate confirmation process would be prohibitively difficult. He would instead therefore become National Security Advisor should Trump win the election, Smith said. He also told of a deep sense of angst even among Trump loyalists in the campaign, saying “Trump often just repeats whatever he’s heard from the last person who spoke to him,” and expressing the view that this was especially dangerous when Trump was away.

Lawfare - The Time I Got Recruited to Collude with the Russians

So you've got reporting that US intelligence has evidence that Russian hackers were discussing trying to get Emails to Mike Flynn via an intermediary, Smith himself telling the journal he discussed with Russian hackers about getting Clinton emails, and a cybersecurity expert who says Smith tried to recruit him to authenticate Clinton emails.

What's not clear is whether there ever were any emails (probably not since they never became public) or the conduct of Flynn or others in the campaign with regard to this operation. It's also not clear who exactly these Russians were Smith was talking to, though US intelligence may know. Keep in my mind this was all 6 weeks after Trump's "Russia are you listening?" comments. It's possible Smith's operation was a rogue dirty tricks shop inspired but not coordinated by the Trump campaign, but there's enough here that will shake the tree for a lot of further reporting.

Is there some sort of database where you find all these articles?

Because I tend to keep track of top news stories and didn't see the second one you listed.

This one I got from twitter. Ben Wittes who runs lawfare is very well-sourced in the national security law community. He's teased a number of scoops on this story in the past month including these Journal stories and the Comey memos (he's buddies with Comey). I use google alerts with relevant search terms but you still end up getting a lot of chaff and missing important stories. The most fruitful thing to do is find the reporters on relevant beats and follow them on twitter. They'll retweet things you wouldn't think are relevant to put in search terms. It also helps to be an obsessive.

WSJ has added to the story:

Smith also said he was involved with Bannon, Conway and a couple of other WH staffers.

Side note: Smith was involved in the Troopergate investigation during the Clinton Administration.

Somebody still needs to find those 30000 fricking emails she destroyed.

I don't particularly care who.

She gets to keep 30000 fricking emails from investigators and the issue is who is looking for them, not what is in them.

That is God damn absurd. That is where the money laundering evidence is. Why the Hell else would she have a private server?

Every single action comey directed was to make it look like the FBI was "investigating" while driving the probability of actually discovering the truth down to approximately zero. This is a God damned farce carried out in broad fricking daylight.

Here's a nice little story about your story:

The now-deceased man, “a longtime Republican opposition researcher” named Peter W. Smith, had theorized that the e-mails must have been stolen, “likely by Russian hackers.” But he had no idea if this was actually so, and he himself certainly had nothing to do with stealing them.

Smith’s desire to obtain the hacked emails, if there were any, peaked around Labor Day 2016 — i.e., during the last weeks of the campaign. This was many months after the FBI had taken physical custody of Clinton’s homebrew server and other devices containing her e-mails. It was also two months after the Bureau’s then-director, James Comey, had told the country that the FBI had found no evidence that Clinton had been hacked

Besides having no relationship with Trump, Smith also had no relationship with the Russian regime. Besides not knowing whether the Clinton e-mails were actually hacked, he also had no idea whether the Kremlin or anyone close to Vladimir Putin had obtained the e-mails. In short, he wouldn’t have been able to tell you whether Trump and Putin were colluding with each other because he wasn’t colluding with either one of them. But — here comes the blockbuster info — Smith was colluding with Michael Flynn. Or at least he kinda, sorta was . . . except for, you know, the Journal’s grudging acknowledgement that, well, okay, Smith never actually told the paper that Flynn was involved in what the report calls “Smith’s operation.”
