You were Rhode Island's Health commissioner?

The problem may indeed be the individual mandate — not its existence, however, but low penalties that encourage healthy people to pay the resulting fine and go without insurance.
You're goddamn right. I'm not shelling out 10k a year when I don't need it, I'll gladly let them add the penalty on to my tax returns.

As Congress prepares to debate the repeal of Obamacare, it should be very careful with the design of the replacement. As our experience in Rhode Island shows, attempts to build an individual insurance market with stable, affordable and high-quality coverage choices based on voluntary participation will not succeed and could leave many people wishing for the good old days of the Affordable Care Act.
lol
Dude barely tiptoes around the fact that he thinks government should be in total control in order to address all the uncontrollable market forces.

No need for the gif, friend. I assume that every time I see you post a/b an article.

It is actually a very good article that gets at the heart of the issue.
That said, I think he dismisses possible solutions too fast with little substantive explanation:
1. Positive enrollment with an opt out
2. Move to Continuous Coverage protection rather than covering preexisting conditions
3. Push subsidized HSA (attached to an insurance plan) which would encourage people to sign up quicker even when healthy so that they can start accumulating in their account.
I think that would be a much better system and save money.

Republicans are currently considering additional ideas that were not available to us in Rhode Island to encourage — but not mandate — young and healthy people to purchase insurance. One idea would require insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions as long as they had continuous coverage beforehand. Another idea is to auto enroll people in a basic insurance plan, requiring them to proactively opt out of coverage.
These ideas are unlikely to work. One could argue automatic enrollment is a greater infringement on personal liberty than an insurance mandate. Moreover, our experience in Rhode Island shows that when given an option to forgo coverage, a segment of the healthy population most needed will seek it.

You mean like Obamacare? Isn't it a relief to know the Republicans can do no worse?

So then just repeal and don't replace.

I mean..... Can we just try freedom on this problem? frick it, let's have the free market figure this shite out over the course of eight years. If we are in worse shape, go to single payer. At least the free market solution won't cost the tax payers anything but time.

The insurance company you had when diagnosed should cover that illness for the duration of the treatment

In all honesty I yearn for the good old before Obama care when I could afford a plan that met my needs not the nation's. Now I pay more for worse. It is now in my economic best interest to stop pulling the wagon and go on government subsidies. Lucky for all of you that I still have pride! But this horse is getting tired of pulling!
