Why is wanting a wall between two countries racist?

My very upset liberal friends on social media keep beating the drum that Trump is a racist because he wants to build a wall between Mexico and the USA.
Why is this racist? The intention is to obviously keep out illegal immigrants but it's also a separate country. Not like he wants to build a wall the split the USA in two.
It just strikes me as a very poorly thought-out argument.

It's not and they are wrong. What it really is is a waste of money. That's why Trump wanted Mexico to pay for it. Mexico on't pay, now Trump is talking fences instead of walls.

I'm not sure. The French and britains came together to build a wall to keep migrants from crossing into their countries. So I'm not sure why it's such a big deal that we do it. Just a reason for people to complain.

I don't necessarily think it's racist, just dumb and impractical. I just really think we can be spending the time and resources on better things that I don't think is going to work all that well. Seriously, how much has the Rio Grande stopped them? Just building a 30 foot wall will cause the demand of 30 foot ladders.

what is even more ridiculous is i bet you the same people look to Canada and Western Europe for all sorts of policy leads and they have incredibly strict immigration policies. they're SO MUCH HARSHER than the US (and Europe doesn't recognize birthright citizenship)

Just ask them if they think a wall is worse than an ocean. Because plenty of legal immigrants have to cross an ocean to get here. And they do it. Legally. Where's the outcry for them?

Because it makes too much sense to assure that the United States remains a Sovereign Nation.
I mean, who the hell wants to have more protections against ISIS (or similar terror groups) entering the country through gaps of security, and proceed to commit acts of terror.

It is not racist it is only rhetoric used to stir up their base. The democrats are at the point where they have overused the term "racist"along with "sexist", "bigot","mysogonistic", "homophobic", and a sleuth of others to rile up their base ,but those terms are being hurled at everyone who disagrees with them ,and people honestly dgaf anymore...

Noone ever talks about a wall with Canada, which is how most illegal Asians get in since Canada hands out visas like candy.
