Greed isn't just about accumulating a lot. It's about selfish desire and you don't get much more selfish desire than wanting shite you didn't earn.

I was simply illustrating that having a lot =/= greed and that one can be very greedy when one doesn't have a lot.

Well. There's that too.
Greed is a "selfish desire".
If I give you something, that doesn't suddenly make YOU greedy!
Note, the word "selfish" is important in that it points to the fundamental element that makes up greed.
The desire for stuff alone isn't greed. The desire for stuff with a "frick everyone else, I'm getting it" attitude is where the term greed applies.
And yes, a rich person can be greedy but being rich is not automatically greedy.
And, greed exists even absent the actual acquisition of goods.
If you have the "frick you, I'm getting what I want" attitude...........but fail to actually get it.......that's STILL greed.

To go back to the OP question.
I feel like a big driver is the fact that our government has grown to infect nearly every corner of society.
This creates a situation where simply saying, "meh, you believe what you want and I'll believe what I want" becomes ever more difficult.
Instead, we've decided that government is an instrument to be used against our fellow citizens to get what we want.
It almost necessitates "us vs them".
I mean, frankly, I wouldn't give someone being gay, tranny, liberal, feminist, black, etc etc etc a second thought under normal circumstances.
But, it's unavoidable today. They aren't happy to let me simply do my thing while they do theirs.

Nature-based, 4C. Evolutionary/Genetic processes wherein COMPETITION pushes all concerned to get better...or die.
Of course - per your sentiment (and Jesus') - there is a point wherein competition becomes counter-productive toward survival, prosperity...and Spiritual progression.
In the current Cultural Paradigm...affluence counts more because given Social Media...everybody knows how the Affluent live it up. Envy comes in play. Throw in Politics as being the arbiter of relative affluence...and it's a dogfight.
