Blacks vs. Blue
Blacks vs. Whites
Republicans vs. Democrats (very evident here)
Etc, etc

Imo, the only us vs them that is legit is citizens vs politicians.

There has literally never been a point in human history where groups havent opposed each other.

The people YOU vote for are the ones who deal in identity politics and love to fan the flames

True, but there's also the issue that government has become so powerful and so pervasive in our everyday lives, people want to make sure "their team" wins because it directly impacts their day to day lives more and more.

If you're trying to say there's a huge divide between the right and the left then I'd agree with you.

However

Don't confuse the GOP with the right. The DNC is becoming more and more identified with the left though.

It is easier to gain power when you can divide and conquer. Then it is easier to stay in power if you can use your conquered minions to attack someone else's conquered minions.

Good point. It seems like some things would be above that, though. I guess not.

But their team doesn't give a shite about them. That's what I don't understand. Cheering for people who are laughing at you.

our brains view attacks on our core beliefs the same as someone physically attacking us

arguing over these things is a form of self preservation, and we will naturally gravitate towards like minded people, not only for safety, but also for confirmation of our core beliefs
