Why do we still have welfare when the US is a Republican Majority

We have Trump with the President's executive power and SCOTUS.

Why are the GOP afraid to just begin the process of eliminating welfare entirely.

They have convinced their base that if welfare is gone, there will be more workers in the job market.

The only problems I see are

1) The effective tax base would increase very little

2) The job market may not be strong enough yet to handle a large influx of workers all at once.

3) The problem is more complex than what the average GOP voter thinks and would backfire against the party.

Definitely not 3.

And give it time. We'll reform this shite out of welfare soon enough.

Probably because a good portion of Republicans benefit from welfare.

I don't understand why people think Gorsuch made some kind of a huge swing in the court's ideology.

Because completely eliminating welfare would be a terrible thing for our economy.

It would disincentivize job searches to match employee's skill with employer's demands and instead incentivize everyone to take the first job that pops up, no matter how far below their skill level that job might be. That would severely depress our aggregate productivity

Welfare needs to be reformed, not eliminated

You really want to see a revolt, let Trump put a bill up eliminating welfare and watch how many of those farmers in Midwestern red states and lower income Republicans will jump out of the woodwork against him

The only thing I want to see addressed is "single mothers farming kids for the free life".

Welfare should not be a lifetime income for people capable of getting a job.

Their lifestyle and comfort would improve once they get a career and stop being lazy useless sponges on society.

Have you seen the post on this and multiple other conservative message boards or complaints at town hall meetings.

Alot of older Republicans do want to get rid of welfare and replace it with a "Charity based system" for lack of a better word.

The issue with charity systems is that it is doubtful they will produce enough revenue over with the same level of certainty compared to our welfare system.

It would be almost impossible to get a bipartisan vote on this.

Because the democrats have lied to you that they wanted to get rid of it. Too bad you believed it.

Welfare is fine with strict limits. Cutting everyone off would have drastic effects on the economy and crime rates.

The problem with welfare programs is there will never be enough political capital to remove them once in place.

Nutrition welfare programs are tied into the farm bill which helps out the republican base.

Quid pro quo

No politicians actually want it gone
