In his farewell speech, Oduma constantly referred to the USA as our "Democracy" but never referred to it as our "Republic"?

Is it because he wants all of the ignorant people listening to his speech to think the USA is a Democracy and not a Representative Republic so the Dumocrats can continue to claim Loser Clinton really won because she got the most popular votes?

Because he's a Democrat.

And our system of a Republic functions as a form of democracy, a representative democracy. Which is far better than a direct democracy.

Like the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics? Or the Islamic Republic of Iran?

We are a Constitutional Republic, but Republic itself is broadly used by nations with vastly different forms of government.

Do Republican presidents refer to it often as a republic in their speeches? I hadn't picked up on it if they do.

Will be interesting to see what Trump calls it most often.

If he says democracy, rip his arse.

I was taught the USA is a representative Republic not a representative Democracy.

Well then you and your teachers are fricking morons because you're confusing two different concepts as mutually exclusive when they are not.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but Sen. Strom Thurmond and Sen. Robert Byrd died quite a while ago.

They are essentially interchangeable.

I am well aware of why our founding fathers decided to have both a Senate and a House of Representatives.

Thanks for having a civil discussion about this with me.

Why has every president for over 100 years used democracy at least interchangeably with Republic. Democracy is the more common term for nations founded in democratic popular institutions.

More faux outrage over non-issues. Where do you people find the energy?

No, they aren't. There is a difference. We are a republic. We are not a democracy.

The definition of a democracy is a government by the people. Is that not what we have?

Why did GW say we needed to spread democracy to Iraq and not spread a republic to Iraq?

Bush also used the term "democracy" in his farewell space. Pretty much every president does. I guess they too hate America?

While we are not a direct democracy, the term democracy is broadly applied to several types of Western forms of government, including representative republics.

Just seems like a waste of a thread to try to play gotcha over semantics when Presidents have consistently referred to the US as a democracy.

Our government functions as a Representative Democracy, which is a form of democracy.

I'm not sure why this is so complicated.

Although many people refer to the US as a democracy we are a constitutional republic. If you describe democracy as invented by the greeks it simply means majority rule. Although our Senators and Representatives are elected by majority rule thats as far as it goes. None of the laws they pass or even the election of the Potus is by majority rule. Even a majority of jurors cannot convict. The word democracy also doesn't appear in the Constitution.

We are a democratic representative republic.

You can be a republic and not be a democracy.

You can be a democracy and not be a republic.

When you compare our system with non representative systems you generally use democracy. The "R" in USSR stood Republics.

I didn't see an issue with that.
