Seems like we get ourselves into more trouble supporting the Saudis than we would if we just conquered them and took their oil.

So much bullshite to keep them in power so we have a "friend" with all the oil, and they outright support our mortal enemies in extremist Sunnis throughout the ME.

We conquer the weak Saudis, in the process making nice with their enemies in Iran, an then all is well, no?

We do not conquer anyone - we can but don't. Never been our style.

How would we "conquer" Saudi Arabia? Have you not been paying attention the last 20 years or so? We create more enemies in the ME than we vanquish when we use military force. What right do we have to take their oil or rule over their country (which would be a nightmare).

The FAR better question is why can't the US move toward energy independence.

As long as we use internationally traded commodities to supply our energy consumption, there will be no independence.

We can conquer it, but we can't control it afterward.

And having Mecca and Medina in the hands of the infidels would radicalize just about the entire Muslim population worldwide.

compare the cost of invading and occupying vs. simply buying their oil, and get back to us

I can't wait till all the oil is gone or we figure out how to power cars with water or something so that that whole region can go back to being an irrelevant wasteland of nomads riding camels from oasis to oasis.

Are y'all of the opinion that oil extracted and processed in America should remain in America?

Because international law says we can't, and we always obey international law. Except when we choose not to obey international law.

Seriously, have you read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? Which parts of those documents inspire in you a desire to conquer the Arabian peninsula? We tend to purchase territory instead of conquering it.

Dude we have the technology to power cars with water but the evil oil companies bought the plans for the technology and locked them in vault. Damn I hate evil oil companies.

I always thought the long-term plan was to use up all the MEs oil first, then start using ours.

I'm sure we can build steam powered cars now but you'd get a max speed of maybe 30 mph.

Conquer Saudi Arabia? Seriously? Just like in Iraq, the military campaign will be an overwhelming success. Saudi Arabia houses a tremendous number of Muslim fundamentalists who would then engage in an insurgency that would make Iraq look like a cakewalk. Foreign extremists would pour in. It would literally be one of the dumbest things this country could ever do.

I believe we technically could do it now if we wanted to. The fracking movement and the deepwater drilling technology has made it feasible.
There is a shite ton of natural gas available to us.

I say we continue as is and import oil from friendly countries while ramping up NG exports to Europe.
My dream is to start building some new nuke power plants.
