All I've ever heard any of them say about it was having to run a Korean off for skimming spilled diesel out of mud puddles.

Heard a horrible story of marines marching into a destroyed village. One marine sees a half naked 5 year old kid crying on the side of the road and asks another marine why the kid is crying. The guy says "he just found out he's Korean".

Maybe you should ask him. Many stories are lost this way.

I asked a few times and the only thing he says it how cold it was and the time his post took a direct artillery hit killing some of his buddies but leaving him relatively uninjured.

I think asking him to tell stories of his time there only rekindles the memories that he wishes he didn't have.

I knew a man (now deceased) who survived the bloody battle of Chosin Reservoir. He never talked about it.

Father-in-law. Captured first day of combat and remained in POW camp until end of conflict, 38 months. Was over 800 people in prison camp. Only about 275-280 survived to return home. Passed away about four years ago with full military honors.

My uncle was an artilleryman in the 1st Marine Division. Two great uncles were in the Air Force. One of those two was in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

I don't know anyone personally.

I recommend everyone watch the Documentary Chosin. It's probably one of the most sobering documentaries on war I've ever seen. Just brutal

Great doc.

Side note - do you get a purple heart if you're KIA?

You dont... but you NOK does. Some of the most beautiful Hearts you'll see are the hand engraved KIA PH's from WWII.

My late Grandfather was in an artillery division during the war.

Lost his leg below the knee. His purple heart is the prettiest things I've ever seen

My dad was captured a few months into it. He was a POW for 18 months. I don't know much about his time there as he never talked about it and he suffered from pretty intense PTSD up until the day he died back in '91. I keep wanting to look into his military records but I have no clue where to even start.

Father-in-law, since 2000, never talked about his experience with his family until 2003. I asked him a question one day about the war (understandingly his own family never mentioned the war to him) and after talking about 15 minutes my wife left the room. I followed her and found her crying. I ask what was wrong and she said "here I am 48 years old and that was the most I've ever heard my dad talk about the war and his captivity".

He really had some horrible stories pertaining to the marches between camps. He basically said the Koreans were the most ruthless bastards on the face of the earth.

I didn't know the man long or intimately as I should but after his original conversation plus many more that followed once he opened up, I was and still am a great admirer of his ilk during that time.

At his burial with full military honors, even the Sgt. of the detail wept as she handed his wife the folded flag. I wept with her.

My dad graduated LSU and was commissioned into the Army out of his ROTC detachment...about six months later he was in Korea...

Spent his time stationed around the 38th Parallel...said it got cold as hell in winter and he was surprised he didn't become an alcoholic because he hit the bottle many a night to the pounding of cannon while he tried to get to sleep on top of an ammo dump...
