It doesn't necessarily mean your ancestors came from England. It just means that your genes are 40% indistinguishable from modern Brits. It could be that your French ancestors came from England long before they moved to France, etc. There's a lot of explanations for it.

Remember that lots of the French in America were Huguenots who lived in England for a while before migrating to America. Thus, it's possible they mixed with the Brits during that time. The Huguenots were basically like illegal aliens that were leaving France to escape religious persecution. They went to England, but it turns out that England didn't want them either and shipped them off to the American colonies ASAP. The English King wanted to MEGA and didn't want them around.

Also, keep in mind that the Brits and French are pretty close genetically, anyway. I mean Europe is pretty homogenous across the board going back thousands of years (especially western Europe). Honestly, I don't think these tests can accurately distinguish a Brit from a Frenchman or a German. There might be subtle differences in the genome, but I am skeptical it's enough to make firm determinations of national origin.

And finally, unless you've researched your family history and established a firm paper trail, you are relying on old "family stories" that are often simply wrong. Your ancestors may not be French or German at all.
