WASHINGTON (AP) — The Navy has been notified that the White House will not intervene to stop a disciplinary proceeding that could cost a SEAL his position in the elite unit, a senior Navy official said Sunday.

Although President Donald Trump had tweeted on Thursday that he would not let the Navy remove Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher from the SEALs, the Navy was given White House guidance on Friday that it can proceed as planned, the Navy official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.

This would seem to have defused a conflict between the president and Navy leaders, although it remained possible that Trump could still use his authority as commander in chief to intervene in the volatile and politically charged Gallagher case, despite assurances received by the Navy.

I bet Trump hires Gallagher himself if the Navy strips his trident.

Trump’s going to use this incident to further expose how fricked up our institutions have become over the past 30-40 years.

A mistake.

The left never backs down.

Neither should we.

The world we live in.. the Secretary of the Navy had to a statement clarifying that a Tweet is not a formal order. If I wasn't living it, I wouldn't believe it.

Gotta choose your battles carefully but I don't believe this will be the final shots fired in this one.

Commander in Chief should get the final word one way or the other. I am hoping this Admiral goes down.

He was correct to pardon him and he's probably correct to let them decide his future with the teams. I suspect they have a lot of evidence/eyewitness accounts that weren't admissible for whatever reason. There are a lot of bad stories about him that had nothing to do with the recent court martial.

The guy's going to retire anyway, Trump took care of him not losing his rank and he'd be a big distraction right now. Even if he technically stayed with the teams I doubt they'd use him in an operational scenario. They have all sorts of places to park people that doesn't involve them doing combat missions.

There are many more non combatants support the actual combatants. Most actual combatants don't make retirement, they get out before 20 much less 30.

Like policeman, once they fire their weapons, shooting someone, they generally do not make retirement as a police officer in the field

I mean even within the SEAL teams, who are all combatants, they have places to park them. Whether he keeps his rating or not he's not going back to the sandbox.

The Navy can go suck a dick. Bunch of traitors in that branch of the military. Army & Marines are much more trustworthy.

I would bet the ranch this story changes on Monday. I doubt very seriously if Trump backs down. If the SECNAV doesn't like it, then quit. He could be easily replaced.
