So you're saying Welfare is bad but a Republican-controlled state can't (or won't) get rid of it?

Connecticut is the true #1 mooch. Completely dependent on corporate welfare. Plenty of insurance companies (individual mandate) and Wall Street and megabank fat cats.

I didn't say Welfare was bad. Can you link to where you think I did or are you just making assumptions?

I think welfare is great if it is used to help people out on a temporary basis. It's the abusers of the system that I have an issue with.

So if a "republican-controlled" state done away with it, they would be punishing those that legitimately need it to dig out of a temporary shortfall. I disagree with punishing those people because of the people that abuse it.

Ending the abuse of the system is something that does need to happen, though.

That's a weird graph. That South Dakota and Montana are so high and North Dakota and Kansas are so low makes me think that there is something going on with the numbers that is not obvious to a first glance. Ditto the difference between Washington and Oregon and Georgia and South Carolina.

Read the Notes: included with the graph. I can't speak for the other states but they are excluding a lot of revenue that is germane to Georgia. Bottom line: the combination of state economy and/or indigent population explains the situation.

they got those calculations by dividing the intergovernmental revenue (which includes Medicaid, but excludes Medicare & Social Security) by the

general revenue with includes all tax revenue except taxes on utilities and liquor

If you would include the taxes people in Louisiana spend on running their A/C and drinking I wonder how far they fall?

Oregon doesn't have a sales tax. Probably get a lot of people coming in from Cali and Washington to shop, and they get no revenue from it so they need funds from DC.

It means more retail jobs but retail jobs suck.

Virginia's number is skewed. The entire east coast of the state is funded by the Fed through salaries. Look up the number of GS/Contractors incomes that reside in the state. Then the state taxes the hell out of it's citizenry.

I think Texas stepped up on their own because the federal government wasn't doing enough on their own.

It's really the federal government's job and only the federal government's job.

Absolutely it's fedgov's responsibility. But they don't take care of it as they should, bc they know that ultimately, Texas will.

Remember the letter re: border security funding that Gov. Perry handed Obama on the tarmac at the Austin airport? Obama wouldn't visit the border, but asked for a $3.7 billion border fix.

As far as Washington and Oregon, I do know that the Seattle metro is a much stronger economic engine than Portland. Seattle has Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Starbucks, Costco and two top ten container ports. Not that familiar with Portland, so if I'm off base someone correct me.

Business Insider ranks Oregon as the number 13 "best" economy in the US and Washington #1.

It's really shocking when you realize that not even 200 years ago nearly every black in the country was employed. Now, over half are on some kind of welfare. There has to be a way to increase black involvement in the workforce allowing them to be more productive members of society.
