This is an older article, but it's still an interesting subject.
Because so many people ( especially men) who are depressed use guns to commit suicide, some doctors feel this makes it appropriate to ask this question.

"Firearm violence is an important health problem, and most physicians agree that they should help prevent that violence," wroteGaren J. Wintemute, a public health expert at the University of California Davis and co-author of the paper, in an email to The Washington Post. In the literature review, which doubles as a call-to-arms, the authors conclude it is neither illegal nor unreasonable to ask patients about gun safety. "No federal or state law prohibits doctors from asking about firearms, counseling about their use, and — when there is imminent risk of harm — disclosing information to others who can help," Wintemute said. Several states have mulled statutes similar to Florida's, but none of the proposed bills have passed

I talk to all of my doctors about guns. They are all enthusiasts as far as I've seen.

"Nope, I lost them all in a boating accident about 10 years ago."

I'm a doctor.

Tell that Doctor that you are interested in terminating your relationship.

Answer like a Marine. "I have a rifle. I have a gun. One is for shooting. One is for fun.

So . . . Why do you ask?"

The problem is that the national leadership of doctors is a liberal political corruption machine.

I wonder why doctors would only ask you about guns if you were depressed? If they are really concerned, wouldn't they also ask you if you had knives, rope, pills, matches, etc?

I'd ask him how he'll code my answer.

I've never been asked the question. I'd say 'yes I do.' It wouldn't bother me.

A nurse before a procedure did ask me from her list of questions "Are you the victim of spousal abuse?"
I said 'Yes.'
She refused to right it down because she didn't believe me. This is why spousal abuse statistics are so unreliable.

Hell no, doctors are forced to report everything about their patients to the American medical association which is a liberal shill group. If you've ever told your doctor that you have guns, or have used drugs, or how much you drink a week, you can guarantee the democrats know about it and will use that info against you

I would say, "No, I don't have a gun." Because I don't own a gun.

I'd tell him that just the idea of personal/familial security alone, does wonders for my psychological health. Otherwise, we'd be low-hanging fruit for the psychotic predators who stalk the vulnerable.

The Law generally arrives to document the carnage and hunt down the criminals. IRL...CYA.

I've never been asked about a gun, but the nurse does ask me how many times I exercise a week and how much alcohol I drink.

Physicians, Psychologists, therapists etc are absolutely required to disclose information to the appropriate authorities and intended victim if there is a risk of imminent harm to another. If, in their opinion, there is an imminent threat of harm to another and the authorities and third-party are not informed, the healthcare provider can easily be held liable. It is called duty to warn. Of course the patient is to be hospitalized as well. Now if someone is suicidal and has a gun, and there is a serious risk of self harm, then the person shall be hospitalized. The person doesn't even have to have a gun and can be hospitalized. You do not reveal information about the gun or really anything else to anyone else but the hospital unless it is a minor. Sometimes some information may, keyword May, be released to the police .

All this talk about doctors reporting info about guns it to the American Medical Association etc. is simply paranoid BS.
