Having thought about this more I admit I did mis-speak (type?) From all indications Franklin wasn't a moron. What is moronic is to take the quote about trading liberty for security literally. There is no way to have any liberty without sacrificing some liberties for the sake of security. If you think this is what Franklin meant by this quote you or he is a moron.

There are numerous examples of our willingly trading liberty for security. Locking doors is a prime example. A gun is a perfect example. In Franklin's time many men had a gun as a means of protection against anyone or anything that would do him harm. Possessing said gun had a detrimental effect on the individuals freedom, however. He was not free to not have the gun once he obtained it. He was not free to have the dammed thing hanging on his belt constantly tugging his pants down. He was not free to live without the thought being in his mind that he may some day have to use the gun on another person. What ya'll seem to be suggesting is that this person or anyone with a lock on their front door do not deserve nor can they expect any liberty or security. Taken literally this statement is about as moronic as saying that anyone who would swap convenience for physical activity deserve neither. If you own a car you shouldn't enjoy the convenience of not walking 20 miles one way to the grocery store or the physical activity of walking the 20 miles. That is the epitome of a moronic statement.
