What if we lifted sanctions and opened trade with NK?

Let's be honest, going to war will cost hundreds of thousands of lives. More sanctions obviously aren't deterring Kim, and only serve to worsen conditions and poverty for the Korean people.
Would it be worth a shot to say ok we recognize you have nukes, and make a deal to try to bring them into the 21st century? Lift sanctions and open trade in exchange for NK suspending any further advances in nuclear technology but accepting what they already accomplished. Along with demanding he improve his human rights abuses. Convince him if he does this his improved economy and nations wealth would make him a hero among his people as their standard of living would improve and famines would end.
Seems like it's worth a try. If you can be friendly and establish economic relations the likelihood of Kim launching a surprise attack would diminish. But he may not even be open to any of that...which in that case war is inevitable at some point.

You mean, reward him for throwing nuclear tantrums?
I can't see how this would lead to anything bad.

We need to figure out a way to get China to stop supplying them with ICBM supplies..

Good post. Makes you think, I bet there will lots of downvotes.
The problem would be he has to keep the populace barefoot and pregnant, so even if you offered free shite they really needed (like farm raised catfish fillets) you could never get it in.

Trade implies that both sides have something of value to exchange. NK can't feed their own people. There is no trade incentive for anyone dealing wit NK due to their non-existent economy.

NK wouldn't go for that. Trade leads to interaction and exchange of ideas and that's dangerous to the regime. They also need to keep the USA as the boogeyman to perpetually rally the peasants around the flag.

Sign a non-aggression pact and pull out American troops from South Korea. Let the Chinese, South Koreans, and the Japanese deal with NK.

Why if we just walk 100 hydrogen bombs across the shite hole and call it a day instead?
Posted on 9/14/17 at 11:10 pm to deltaland
Don't they actually need something to trade first?

Totally agree.
I'm not sure why so many people think that more of the same will change anything. Another 50 years of isolation and sanctions will do nothing but reinforce the regime. No totalitarian state can survive free trade.

What if you paid attention to current events when Clinton was president.

Except that's not true.^

"Relax, we're only going to rape you a couple of dozen times. It's no big deal, and you'll be fine after."

Did you work in either the Carter or Clinton administrations?
