There was a great Marvel comic back in the day that would pick an event and then tell a story as if it happened differently. If they did a comic on Trump's presidency, they might have picked Trump nominating someone else for Attorney General.

How things would have been different:

Sessions would be a reliable vote in the Senate instead of a Democrat.

A different AG would not have had to recuse himself for the Russia investigation. Probably could have fired Comey after his inauguration without any concern for optics.

Trump would have been more relaxed without the recusal. Would have had an AG to give him inside info.

Would have never had to back loser Strange.

No one outside of Alabama would have heard of Roy Moore.

Mueller would not have been needed.

Depending on the AG pick, we could have legal marijuana now and still have been tough on immigration.

Sessions was a terrible choice for AG

however, that debt had to be paid

Sessions has been such a disappointment. Completely useless.

I argued with a colleague, at the time Sessions was nominated, that he was a likely choice for AG, not only for what Trump suspected was a skill set worthy of the job, but also because it was probably the easiest seat (at the time) to be guaranteed to be refilled by a republican.

I still believe the Sessions appointment was a strategic attempt to simply back-fill a republican seat with another republican and he wasn't appointed entirely because he thought he was the best man for the job.

no

Sessions got the AG job b/c when he decided to help Trump in mid 2016, he told Trump he wanted to be AG. that's the cost of doing business

Can hardly believe you actually presented a reasonable 'what if' analysis.

Kudos, I guess...

If that's the case - he still wasn't appointed because he was the best man for the job.

Basically this....Sessions wanted the AG position badly and Trump had a political debt to pay. Turned out to be a terrible choice.

I just thought that it has been an amazing bad streak of events that all lead back to that state. And Jeff Sessions.

Without Sessions his approval ratings could be at least 10 points higher.

Sessions was an early supporter.
AG was political payment.
Christie was radioactive.
The complications re russia including recusal were unexpected. Moore winning primary was unexpected. Dem winning election was unexpected.
Imperfect storm.
