It appears that people today think it is a zero sum game.

If someone else wins, then you lose.

That is not the case. Obama probably benefitted many people who hated him. Trump is benefiting people who hate him,

I am not a fan of Obama, but if I were to meet him I would be 100 percent respectable. I would never walk out if he were a guest speaker,

I don't understand people who think this "in your face liberalism" is the correct path.

As a conservative, I hold many views that would be considered liberal. But this psycho wing keeps me from identifying with liberals of any sort.

Ah sane person. Well said. Most posters downvote novel ideas because the poster or source is not like them.

Two points

1) I think there is a possibility of returning to respectful discourse, in large part, but it will require people on both sides shutting down the fringes and that may be unlikely.

2) I think the radical contingents are growing larger. To the extent that I'm not sure my kids will live in a world where Americans have more to bind them than divide them.

Its a job/lifestyle for these goons. They are born, bred into it. If your lucky enough to get elected into it...you have to conform, or you will go by the way side.

Not only that but the powers that be seem to have completely ruled out peaceful secession and partition.

For some reason there is a stubborn insistence that people who hate each other are forced to live together instead of having their own homeland.

Ghandi saw the futility in this and opened the door to partitioning India. Why can't we?

You are completely wrong and naive. All politics and all economics are zero sum games.

It'd be nice, but I doubt the fringes get shut down. The fringes consume their partisan news and opinion like an alcoholic buys beer. Those sources make their scratch off the fringes. Don't know how you get that horse back in the barn.

They will live in an America with more to bind than divide, but I wonder if the majority will realise that reality or not.

I agree with your general theme.

However, I have to point out that as someone who hated Obama and still does, I didn't benefit whatsoever from his tenure. My insurance rates went up roughly 400% from 2014-2016, which essentially left me having to make the choice of foregoing much of my future retirement savings or completely changing my lifestyle so that I could subsidize a bunch of lazy frickers who won't work and get their own insurance.

Totally agree. What happened to manners and ethics? It's concerning.

Of course everyone didn't benefit. In fact , most people did not because Obama was a complete failure as a president.

But I respect him as a man and a president.
