What exactly does the Federal Department of Education do? Why fund it?

Even in this world of Fedgov > Stategov, the DoE seems especially useless to me. What exactly does it do and how would the US suffer from it's elimination?

Push a lot of globalist, statist ideas.

The words "school" and "education" cannot be found in the text of the U.S. Constitution. It is a function that should be left to the states. If there is some desire to bolster that at the federal level, it should be in the form of block grants. Don't need a bloated bureaucracy to do that.

Well, they try to set educational standards throughout the the country, so everyone has an equal opportunity at becoming an educated and functional part of American society.

Unfortunately for America, people like you probably tell your kids that what they're learning are lies and make them watch Alex Jones YouTube videos in place of helping them with their homework.

They distribute FAFSA money. That's about it.

Yes, because ensuring that the standards of education are above board in a first world country is exactly what a "statist" would do.

The irony of all of this is lost on the great majority of you.

I didn't mean to start this thread in a sarcastic libertarian way... I legitimately want to know what to do. I suspect very little, but I can't tell if people's "essentially nothing" responses are sarcastic or serious.

Do significant federal taxes go towards education? I Googlered "federal taxes education" and it replied with a bunch of federal tax credit/benefit links. Not what I'm looking for.

And yet creationism is taught in public schools.

So at their best, they're bad at their jobs.

Education in the US is extremely decentralized. It's mostly left up to the states to establish standards. The department of education doesn't even have control over university accreditation. There's some fat in the department (like all government shite) but it's pretty lean compared to other departments.

I'd say it's probably equal to the number of times you've had an coherently independent thought.

So, never. The answer is never.

It's a mix of the two. The DOE really doesn't have much oversight over state educational standards, as most of that is regulated by state education departments.

Like I said, the biggest thing the DOE does is distribute Federal Student Aid.

It's the smallest cabinet-level department staff wise. They only have around 5,000 employees.
