President Obama's pick to serve as the next surgeon general was confirmed Monday evening more than a year and half after being nominated, the first of nearly a half dozen of the president's picks set for confirmation this week as Democrats prepare to cede control of the U.S. Senate.

Senators voted 51 to 43 to confirm Vivek Murthy, a Harvard and Yale-educated doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, whose nomination had been in limbo amid concerns about his experience, and opposition from the gun lobby.

As surgeon general, Murthy, 37, will serve as the nation’s top spokesperson on public health issues. Boris Lushniak has served as acting surgeon general since July 2013.

Senators in both parties had questioned whether he was too inexperienced for the job, or whether his efforts to get Obama elected and support the president's health-care law made him too polarizing a figure.

But by far the most vehement opposition to Murthy’s confirmation came from the National Rifle Association, which called him a “serious threat to the rights of gun owners” because of his support of tighter gun control laws. That animosity in part dates to a tweet Murthy sent out in 2012: "Tired of politicians playing politics w/guns, putting lives at risk b/c they're scared of NRA. Guns are a health care issue."

...nothing that comes out of this administration surprises me anymore....Obama and his whole crew are a dumpster fire....bad part about it is that the fire is consuming America.

He supports Obamacare and has bundled hundreds of thousands of dollars to OFA.

Imminently qualified.

Cool.

Someone new in the Obama administration to lampoon and make fun of.

It's about time for another national debate on gun control. I'd highly recommend Democrats jump on this full bore in 2016. Suggested slogan for Warren could be "Take thunder sticks from palefaces." Maybe the Hands Up, Don't Shoot occupy crowd could camp out at the Winchester HQ in New Haven.

Completed a residency in internal medicine in 2006. Basically, as best as I can tell, completion of a 3yr residency is his single medical claim to fame.

There's no way he could have been seeing a decent number of patients if he was busy making the necessary connections to become SG this young.

I think I've had the hoodie I am wearing longer than he has been a doctor.

That's exactly what this admin is comprised of. Inexperienced young, smug, kiss asses that are more concerned with sticking it to their opponents than serving the country. I despise these incompetent fricks in the White House and the liberals that support them.

Same thing is basically going on in the federal judiciary. That has bigger implications than this do nothing position.

The role of the Surgeon General is to draw attention to pressing public health concerns.

BS Magna cum laude at Harvard in 3 years (Biochemical Sciences)
MD/MBA at Yale (was AOA)
Internal Medicine Residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital
Instructor at Harvard Medical School
Founder and President of Doctors for America
Served on the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health
Chairman and Co-founder of TrialNetworks, a cloud-based Clinical Trial Optimization System

We could list the awards he won for patient care and teaching. Or his accolades for public service and leadership. But sure, reduce that CV to his residency completion 8 years ago.

On the contrary. A nice potted plant is qualified to be surgeon general. The office has no purpose and no authority to do anything.
