What he actually said was the Democratic party had lost the South for 50 years and he was right, don't believe everything you hear on talk radio. In 1944, before Truman "backstabbed" White Southerners by doing such things as integrating the military and proposing federal anti-lynching legislation, FDR won 81% of the vote in Louisiana, 94% in Mississippi, 81% in Alabama, 82% in Georgia and 88% in South Carolina. In 1964, Goldwater won all of these states in a landslide, but didn't win any other states except his home state of Arizona.

Some parts were honestly hard to read. It's hard for me to fathom that people can be so evil, but I guess I'm naive.

The book made me soften my opinion of LBJ a bit. I always thought he was a pretty loathsome man, but I have to admit that in final analysis he ended up doing the right thing vis a vis civil rights and I tip my hat to him for that.
