Did he have any redeeming qualities?

He was a white male. Does anything else need to be said?
Posted on 9/26/17 at 9:59 am to tigerpawl
he fought for a noble cause.

I only met him once for lunch.
He was nice enough. He was adamant about splitting the check though.

He was the greatest cadet West Point ever produced.

are we talking about the confederate general or the broadcaster?

I've known a few Democrat history profs. They all agreed that Lee was a person of very high character.

He fought for a despicable cause. That's my issue with him. Of course he probably wasn't some cartoon villain, though.
Good men make poor decisions on occasion.

One of the most honorable men this nation has ever produced, including the founders.

In modern lexicon, yes.
But you would not hear the men who fought against him say he was anything but honorable. I doubt many of the slaves would have called him a bad man.
They hated that he was so effective at what he did, and every last one of them would have wanted him on their side.

If the issue is slavery then I agree. It was a despicable institution and one that would have died under it's on weight in time.
If the issue is states rights then the fight was a noble one and one that was sadly lost.
I bristle when fools call Lee and other confederate generals traitors. These men were loyal to their states as was the custom at the time.

It would help if you looked up what he did both before, and more importantly, after the War. Read a book or two on the subject. There is a reason that one of the most prominent private liberal arts universities in the country includes his name that has little, if anything, to do with his service to the CSA

In my opinion, it is not an accurate to measure a historical figure (or any person really from the past) based only on modern standards. You need to judge him by the standards of his day. They are a product of their times.
Based on the standards of his time, Robert E. Lee was judged to have been a good, moral, and noble person who was respected in both the North and the South.
Therefore, I would say that Robert E. Lee was in general, a good person.

why ask that question when your follow up indication implies that he was a bad person.

This is not true. HIs former house isn't Arlington Cemetery because the Union respected him - it's because they wanted him to lose the ability to return to his home after his disgrace.
