Victim politics. How do we lift this evil societal veil?

Thomas Sowell can meander around a topic a bit, but he's usually good for one or two succinct lines that hit the nail on the head.
The Highway to Serfdom
The Highway to Serfdom
quote:
Once, when I was teaching at an institution that bent over backward for foreign students, I was asked in class one day, “What is your policy toward foreign students?” My reply was: “To me, all students are the same. I treat them all the same and hold them all to the same standards.” The next semester there was an organized boycott of my classes by foreign students. When people get used to preferential treatment, equal treatment seems like discrimination.

I stopped at:
quote:this is so false I can't believe it. Maybe he thinks it true, but good grief.
I am so old that I can remember when sex was private. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” applied to everybody.

OK, tell us about your sex life.

You stoppd at that? Don't be so literal. Do you deny that American society was previously much more private about sexual matters, and that public mentioning of sexual topics was generally taboo? I'm pretty sure Sowell is aware that there has always been a "sexually explicit" segment of society. Nevertheless, don't let that segway derail the main point.

I don’t happen to like the idea of “stop and frisk.” However, I like even less the idea of armed hoodlums going around shooting people. Those who refuse to see that everything has a cost should be confronted with the question “How many more young blacks are you willing to see shot dead, because you don’t like ’stop and frisk’”?
All of them, Thomas. Fourth amendment.

Now, I don't suggest that there isn't debate on this topic, but let us remember that there is a little qualifier in the 4th - "unreasonable".
quote:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
I would suggest that if we got anywhere near the point of "all of them", meaning all black men being killed by gun violence, we have probably surpased the point were stop and frisk would have been a reasonable option to stem the violence.

What is your probable cause?

Do you oppose all warrantless searches? Do you not recognize a difference between a pat down and a search?
There's lots of case law on these topics, but I'll just say for my part, I recognize the need for distinctions.

"Divorcee" used to be a racy term. Single mothers were ostracized. Homosexuals were openly shunned.
Sowell is waxing poetic about a time that never existed.

You just contradicted yourself.

How do you get this:
Out of this;
????
He may have a rosy picture of the past, but a) you're reaching, and b) it's a different discussion than the topic at hand. Are you deflecting?
Are we ever going to stop making special rules for the eternal victims? Are they going to step up to the plate of being truly equal?

I submit instead of Don't Ask Don't Tell it was "we better not find out or you're fricked."
