WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday that any military solution to the North Korea crisis would be “tragic on an unbelievable scale” and Washington was working internationally to find a diplomatic solution.

North Korea has defied all calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programs, even from China, its lone major ally, calling them legitimate self-defense.

It has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the U.S. mainland, and experts say its test on Sunday of a new missile was another important step toward that aim.

“We are going to continue to work the issue,” Mattis told a Pentagon news conference.

“If this goes to a military solution, it’s going to be tragic on an unbelievable scale. So our effort is to work with the U.N., work with China, work with Japan, work with South Korea to try to find a way out of this situation.”

Clinton, Bush, and Obama should be flogged in public for letting it get to this point.

He is right but unfortunately it looks like we are headed in that direction.

Tough situation for sure.

Had it been dealt with 10 years ago it wouldn't be as hard to now. Same goes for 10 years from now

In a decade it could be "tragic on an global scale." Imagine Kim with functioning ICBs and warheads pointed at the large metro areas all across Asia and the western US. Imagine when he eventually perfects sub surface launches from his sub fleet.

With the revolving door of the Oval Office I could understand not wanting to be the one to rip off the bandaid, it won't be painless for any admin. Someone will have to one day though

They've been laying the path to war for sometime now. I don't think our military is ready yet since they're still technically in sequestration. Once the $ starts flowing again and recruiting is up, they'll give the Green Light to go kinetic with conventional forces.

Its always been a shite sandwich that the military knew would be tragic if war happened.

Those fricks can't even get rockets off the Korean peninsula.

It is open source. Nothing to actually learn from it. And it will not survive the first 170mm shell.

A decade ago they didn't have the technology to detonate a nuclear explosion. Where was their ICBM tech at that point?

They are only going to get more advanced and more capable. Yes so will our defenses, but I can't speak for the rest of the world. So if we were ever to have to make a move with the best interest of our west coast cities in mind it will only be more collateral damage for us to deal with in Asia

If North Korea is so bad why does Dennis rodman go there so much?

I hear you, but it was a tragic situation 10 years ago.

Every President listed had a really difficult decision to make on North Korea, and chose to wait out regime change. I don't think we can tell yet whether that will prove to be bad decision making or not.

Indeed.
I stated the obvious in the NK thread yesterday: Military action in NK would unleash hell on East Asia.
Pyongyang would strike hard and fast ... all or nothing.

I hear you too and agree. I'm not advocating an invasion, just giving the cons of letting them continue to develop unchallenged.

I don't think waiting for a regime change is a terrible move, they would know more about the likelyhood of that happening than me. I think a good shot would have been during the transition from il to un. Looks like Un has solidified himself already through purges though.

Correct.

I like the comments out Mattis. I really like the fact that we are forcing them into isolation from the Chinese, that makes our options easier.

It won't be that tragic. Taking out the Jong regime will be fairly easy. The question is what happens after that? China may have to house some refugees for a while, but with international help (troops, money) we can make this a humane transition.

If there was ever a people that NEEDED the U.S., it was the NK's. This is not a neocon "grab their oil" type of ploy we've seen in the past. Our troops really would be fighting for freedom in this case.

If we can get Europe and China to do their fair share here (troops, money, logistics), I am all for going in and taking that mofo out.
