Reason we have shitty teachers is because it doesnt pay and it isnt a sexy job.

if we increased the pay, that may change.

Nope. This is due to frivolous lawsuits and the threat of being labeled a child molester by a random parent who just doesn't like you. It's a real concern for people looking into teaching. We have garbage teachers because the people who go into teaching in those types of environments will not push the children to learn because they know where that will lead.

If we are going to pay more, then we must also remove the defined benefit pension plans and also tenure.

An increase in pay would not be enough to fix the risk.

Of course, that's a little over 70K in USD.

This is a bullshite talking point. Teachers make more than the average median household income and do it in 9 months. And they usually have decent benefits and a good retirement.

Except our score has improved. Our score in 1980 was 0.790 and now it is 0.890. Given that the index is scored from 0 to 1, that is an improvement. Other countries have seemingly improved more, but the US has been consistently top five in those rankings since 1980.

For 4 times as much money spent per student(adjusted for inflation) than in 1980

Not a good return on investment

You shouldnt group teachers with people who work in fast food etc.

Take the average of a bachelors degree holder with a certificate and teachers will be on the lower percentile.

also I am not a teacher and neither are you, but I am pretty sure they dont work only 9 months.

Michelle Rhee paid teachers nearly 6 figure and handed out bonuses for teachers that performed well.

She was then fired (technically stepped down) because unions got mad because she was firing teachers that weren't performing.

You said they don't make that in 10 years not 1-3. You're just trolling at this point.

Rankings are kind of shaky, anyway, right? For example, Finland ranked number one, but I think they take a significant number of their kids and put them on a vocational track whereby they won't be evaluated in the ratings. We don't do that.

Our university system is second to none, though. That is, it will be until the government screws it up by offering free tuition to everyone...

The most teacher contract days per state is 200 and the lowest is 175. 5 days per work week = 40 weeks for a high and 35 weeks for the low.

Average starting college salary was $50k for 2015. Average starting teacher salary was $36k. Adjusted for a 9.5 month work year for a teacher is $45.4k.

I read an article in yesterday's NYT about the lack of black teachers in K-12 schools in America. The article could have been a word by word reprint from the same articles from 30 years ago.

The dynamic is the same today as it was then. If you're a black guy with a college degree from a good school and you have the acumen to teach HS English Lit at a good school you could make triple the salary in private sector businesses because they can compete with any school district in America.

This applies to whites in STEM fields but that's more narrow.

No it's not. My sister was a teacher. She stopped because there is zero discipline in schools. The students ruled the system.

She taught in 3 states.

Why did you claim in your anchored thread that you have a degree in agricultural economics and to be an "economist" when you posted in this thread you started on 2/3/17 that you majored in "education and physical therapy"?

2.53 gpa in education and physical therapy?!?!
