I tell everyone I know about that place if visiting.

Is there an ongoing effort to translate school textbooks into Ebonics?

WTF, everyone knows textbooks are racist, forcing melanin enriched people to learn what is contained in a book instead of other stuff that comes into their head is a colonial construct.

I think our American grammar changes over time. With Twitter, text and other internet outlets it is getting worse.

My grammar is already terrible

Does anyone bother to point out that we finished basic grammar in the 8th grade? If a student cannot complete their course work with correct basic grammar, then they don't belong in college.

Drifting way off topic now but, for its size, Tacoma has a damn strong food scene.

I didn't know you were a college athlete roger. I'm just kidding; I feel guilty calling out grammatical errors since I make them frequently. Besides, that's an easy one to make.

Low expectations are racist.

They think acquiring identification or speaking correct English is unfair to expect of minorities. That should be insulting not celebrated

Yeah it does. I just bought a house here. For a city of its size, it has really good food. Also the views here are better than Seattle.

Also, from what I gather, UWT is the main reason downtown Tacoma is bearable.

Not just grammar. Everything, apparently...
quote:

The writing center works from several important beliefs that are crucial to helping writers write and succeed in a racist society. The racist conditions of our society are not simply a matter of bias or prejudice that some people hold. In fact, most racism, for instance, is not accomplished through intent.

Racism is the normal condition of things. Racism is pervasive. It is in the systems, structures, rules, languages, expectations, and guidelines that make up our classes, school, and society. For example, linguistic and writing research has shown clearly for many decades that there is no inherent “standard” of English.

Language is constantly changing. These two facts make it very difficult to justify placing people in hierarchies or restricting opportunities and privileges because of the way people communicate in particular versions of English.

quote:

Furthermore, by acknowledging and critiquing the systemic racism that forms parts of UWT and the languages and literacies expected in it, students and writing center consultants can cultivate a more socially just future for everyone.

Just avoiding racism is not enough because it means we are doing nothing to stop racism at large, and it amounts to allowing racism to continue.
