United will now offer up to $10,000 for passengers who give up their seat on an overbooked flight
by Phil LeBeau

United Airlines hopes more cash, better training and fewer oversold flights will help the airline avoid a repeat of the controversy and public relations disaster that erupted after a passenger was dragged off one of its flights earlier this month.

While CEO Oscar Munoz continues to apologize for how the airline had Dr. David Dao removed from his flight, he is also wrestling with how to change United's culture when it comes to customer relations. As a result, United is instituting 10 policy changes when it comes to overbooking flights, bumping passengers and improving customer service.

Among the new policies that have already gone into effect or will this week:

• United will offer up to $10,000 to customers who volunteer to give up their seat on an overbooked flight. In the incident involving Dao, he and other passengers were offered $800.

• Passengers who are on board and in their seat cannot be removed from a flight unless there is a safety or security issue.

• United will reduce the amount of overbooking, especially on last flights of the day, to a particular destination or on those flights on which passengers tend not to volunteer to give up their seat. . . .

wow - that's overkill - I would volunteer every time & people will likely be fighting for it when it happens...

they could have sent the same message with $2500

nice for PR to create a policy like this, but $10K?

wow

Won't ever happen; hell they can rent a private plane for less than that.

That seems awfully high. And stupid of the other passengers to refuse $800.

And subsequently increase the costs of all flights. Congratulations reactionaries. You earned it.

Total PR move as they will start at $500 and "auction" up from there.

It will never make $10k. Someone will take a smaller number at some point between $800 and $10k.

not possible. I was assured by experts on this website that they weren't allowed to go beyond a certain dollar point

Hmm. Apparently those experts were wrong

the keywords being up to. In other words. You offer low and if you get no takers you incrementally go up. Basically what they should have done in the first place

exactly. They could just as well have announced that the top number was $1000000. The bottom line is that they'll do what they should have done in the first place

I cannot speak for everyone ... but, the reason why I stopped jumping on $300 or $500 or whatever ... is that is was a pain the fricking arse to ever try to redeem the goddamn voucher.

It's like those stupid fricking rebates at gun stores and places like Best Buy.

frick all that.

They will not offer $10K ... it will likely be up to a $10K voucher that can be used for up to X passengers on a single flight with restrictions ... I guarantee it will be such a pain in the arse ... that people will start to pass on it, too.

Delta announced a $10K max a few weeks ago so United had to match it

Meh, they could have set it at $25K. It's all PR; "up to" is the key phrase.

As I said in the Dao case, if the dumb SOBs would have simple auctioned the offer until they had takers, they'd have probably had 4 thrilled passengers at $1200/seat.

No way a planeload of passengers ever holds off past $3K-$4K per seat. So the $10K won't ever be approached.

Will be interesting to see what that new number will end up being on average.

I've never taken the offer to get off the plane because the tickets they offer and shitty hotel were never enough incentive.

$5k though...

Right. Its like if they can make it financially work at 10k why the hell were they capped at 1,500? (or whatever they capped at)

The are matching Delta's policy update (they moved it up to 10k after the pill pusher incident).

It will never get that high. This is just a policy change to allow gate agents the ability to go higher.

I mean that isn't going to be their initial offer. You, I, and everyone else will volunteer long before it gets to $10,000.

There shouldn't be a limit at all.

Smoke and mirrors.

It's like a dental insurance company offering $25k in annual benefits. 4% of people ever get to $1k in annual benefits. It's just eye candy.
