United Airlines is determined to surpass Comcast

I swear, one cannot make these things up (article in its entirety because there's enough ads that my visit alone should cover everyone on TD):
Couple saves flight dumping fuel, gets treated terribly
Couple saves flight dumping fuel, gets treated terribly

A newlywed couple that saved a United Airlines flight from potential disaster after pointing out a fuel leak was left stranded by the airline.
Mike and Rachel Brumfield were on their way to their honeymoon in Venice from New Jersey on June 13 when they noticed fuel leaking from the edge of the plane's left wing, the Daily Mail reported.
“I’m sitting looking out window at the wings, and all of a sudden fuel started shooting out of the wing really really hard,” Rachel Brumfield, 28, told the New York Post. “It was huge -- it looked like a fire hose.”
It is not clear where the fuel leak originated or how much fuel was spilled. Passengers were placed in a hotel overnight, and the airline was hoping to have them on a new flight the following day.
But the Brumfields said they never got a hotel. Mike took to Facebook to blast the airline for failing to accommodate him and his wife during what was supposed to be their honeymoon trip.

Mike wrote:
My beautiful bride on our honeymoon. Thank you, United Airlines.
We saved your united flight 170 from possibly crashing into the Atlantic, you praised us saying you'd take GOOOOD care of us, then canceled the flight and disappeared.
We landed 11 hours ago. We're stranded. Every hotel booked. And they have no idea where our luggage is and don't seem to care.
We're supposed to be in Venice right now, starting a romantic day. But, luckily, several united airlines employees have been super rude to us, so at least there's that!!
The couple was able to book a Delta flight at the last minute. United only gave them a food voucher and no accommodation. They slept on the floor of baggage claim until 7:30 a.m. when a fellow passenger gave them his hotel voucher. United Airlines has since issued a statement on the incident, but did not acknowledge Brumfield's claims.
quote:
“While taxiing to the runway yesterday evening, United flight 170 traveling from Newark to Venice, Italy returned to the gate due to a fuel leak, and was later canceled," spokesman Jonathan Guerin told the New York Post. "We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. Our team helped provide customers with hotel accommodations for the night and are working to get them back on their way to Venice today."
This is just the latest incident that has resulted in a wave of negative press for United Airlines.

Sounds terrible, but that photo of her sleeping on the floor is clearly staged.

Need some more details. For starters, what happened? Why did the other passengers get placed and not them?
I find it strange that all the passengers, except for this couple, ended up in a hotel. Did they speak up? Did they talk to the agents when vouchers were getting handed out? Were they last in line, and the United staff ran out of vouchers and said "sorry, we just ran out. tough shite."?
I think there's more to this story.

Yep.
Sorry, but these United stories are starting to go in one ear and out the other. I'm 100% sure we're not getting the entire story.

Something fishy about this. First, the wings are where the fuel tanks are primarily. If they overflowed the tanks the fuel would go out there.
Also, when something like this happens the airline sends everybody to a ticket counter and the passengers are rebooked and given vouchers for hotel and usually taxi and food vouchers, as well. Why did everybody else go to the ticket counter and they did not?
ETA
Read another article and the airline said there was a leak, too. I can't imagine what would cause that like it was coming out.

Have you never been delayed overnight in an airport when there were no hotel vacancies?
They will bring out cots for people to sleep on or people lie down on the seats, not the floor.

Title is probably unlikely... Comcast likely retains the top spot through its spot as a local monopoly.
People can avoid United. A lot of people are stuck with Shitcast.

No, I have not.

Fair enough. I was more or less noting the fact that the store behind her is clearly closed, implying it was before or after standard operating hours of the airport.

I mean, that is a bit of a stretch. The crew would have noticed a fuel leak before they even took off.

Well the ground crew didn't

I highly doubt they were the ones that noticed the fuel leak and that the captain and crew would have had no idea otherwise.
This seems like fake news.
And is it really "political"?

After a quick search, this looks to be the answer. Looks to be a vent from the surge tank.
Surge tank - a tank connected to a pipe carrying a liquid and intended to neutralize sudden changes of pressure in the flow by filling when the pressure increases and emptying when it drops.

Of course if they had to spend the night in the airport at some point it was after operating hours.
I have been in airport overnight and all you want to do is find a quiet place to grab a little shut eye while all the janitors are working and running their equipment.
United really does stink. Delta used to be just as bad but they have made some progress in actually being customer friendly since SWA went into Atlanta.

They did a pretty good job of getting everyone to clear out and turn the lights off, then.

Yeah, it's obvious.
Pretty sure any normal person would choose an out-of-the-way location near the seating areas or next to a wall.
Not in the middle of the damn floor like an abandoned 4-year-old.
